Octavia Estelle Butler (born June 22, 1947) is an American science fiction writer. A multiple recipient of both the Hugo and Nebula awards, Butler has been called one of the best science fiction writers of the 20th century. She has also been credited as being a pioneer of Afrofuturism.
Butler was born in Pasadena, California, to Octavia Margaret Guy, an African-American domestic worker, and Laurice James Butler, a shoeshine man. Octavia was the only child of her parents, who separated when she was very young. As a result, she was raised by her maternal grandmother, Octavia Margaret Guy, who was also a domestic worker.
Butler showed an early interest in writing, and wrote her first science fiction story at the age of 10. She continued to write throughout her teenage years, but did not begin to seriously pursue a career in writing until after she had finished college.Butler attended Pasadena City College before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles, where she studied English. She later received a master’s degree in history from California State University, Los Angeles.
Butler’s first novel, Kindred, was published in 1979. The novel tells the story of a young black woman who is transported from the 20th century to the antebellum South, where she must save the life of her white ancestor.Butler’s subsequent novels include Wild Seed (1980), Mind of My Mind (1977), and Patternmaster (1976). These novels, along with Kindred, are collectively known as the Patternist” series.Butler’s other works include the “Xenogenesis” trilogy, consisting of the novels Dawn (1987), Adulthood Rites (1988), and Imago (1989)
