Liesel Meminger is a nine-year-old girl living in Nazi Germany during World War II. She is taken in by a foster family, the Hubermanns, after her mother is sent to a concentration camp and her father is killed by the Gestapo. Liesel befriends the Hubermanns’ son, Rudy, and their neighbor, Max Vandenburg, a Jewish man hiding from the Nazis.
