Liesel Meminger is the protagonist of The Book Thief. She is a nine-year-old girl living in Nazi Germany with her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann. Liesel is illiterate when she comes to live with the Hubermanns, but Hans teaches her to read and she quickly becomes a voracious reader. Liesel steals books from the Nazi book burnings, the mayor’s wife’s library, and eventually from the concentration camp library. She shares her love of books with her friend, Rudy Steiner, and the Jewish man her family is hiding, Max Vandenberg. Liesel’s story is narrated by Death.
