Howard Pyle was an American illustrator and author, considered to be the father of American illustration. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1853. Pyle’s father was a newspaper editor and publisher, and his mother was a schoolteacher. Pyle was educated at the Friends’ School in Wilmington and at the Art Students League of New York.nPyle began his career as an illustrator for Harper’s Weekly and other magazines. He also illustrated books, including The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and The Last of the Mohicans. In 1883, Pyle founded the first school of illustration in the United States, at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia.nPyle’s students included N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, and Andrew Wyeth. Pyle died in 1911.
