Henry Fleming is a young man who enlists in the Union Army during the Civil War. He is eager to fight for the North and to prove his bravery to himself and others. However, as the war progresses, Henry begins to experience the horror and brutality of combat. He becomes increasingly disillusioned with the war and his own role in it. By the end of the novel, Henry has been profoundly changed by his experiences and is no longer the naïve boy he once was.
