Harriet Tubman was an African American abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped in 1849 and went on to help hundreds of other slaves escape via the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, she served as a nurse and helped lead Union troops during several raids in South Carolina. After the war, she continued to fight for African American rights and helped establish the Tubman Home for the Aged in Auburn, New York.

She then helped others escape from slavery by leading them on the Underground Railroad. Tubman was also an active participant in the abolitionist movement.
