Frank McCourt was born in Brooklyn, New York to Irish immigrants. He was the eldest of seven children. McCourt’s father was an alcoholic and could not hold down a job, which left the family living in poverty. McCourt’s mother was a strong woman who did her best to keep her family fed and clothed.McCourt was an intelligent student and was able to attend Catholic schools on scholarships. He eventually graduated from New York University with a degree in English. After college, McCourt taught high school in New York City.It was not until he was in his sixties that McCourt decided to write about his childhood experiences. His memoir, Angela’s Ashes, was published in 1996 and won the Pulitzer Prize. McCourt’s story is one of hope and resilience in the face of great adversity.
Frank McCourt’s life was one full of struggle, heartache, and ultimately, triumph. Despite all of the hardships he faced, McCourt was able to find success both as a writer and as a teacher. His life is an inspiration to us all, and his story is one that will be remembered for years to come.
