About Fathers and Sons

Fathers and Sons is a novel by Ivan Turgenev, published in 1862. The novel follows the lives of two friends, Arkady Kirsanov and Nikolai Petrovich Paustin, as they come of age during the social and political upheaval of early 1860s Russia. Arkady is the illegitimate son of a wealthy landowner, Nikolai Petrovich Kirsanov, and a young peasant woman, Fenichka. Nikolai Petrovich has since married a woman of his own class and they have a son, Nikolai. Arkady grows up on his father’s estate and is educated at home by tutors. He is a bright and precocious child, but his unconventional upbringing makes him an outsider in society. Nikolai Petrovich dies when Arkady is nineteen, and Arkady inherits the estate. He decides to move to Saint Petersburg to study at the university there. In Saint Petersburg, Arkady meets Nikolai Vsevolodovich Bazarov, the son of a doctor from a lower-class background. Bazarov is a radical thinker who rejects all traditional values. He is also brusque and insensitive, and Arkady is initially put off by him.Arkady introduces Bazarov to his Uncle Pavel, a retired military officer who is a man of refined taste and a conservative thinker. Pavel is immediately offended by Bazarov’s rudeness and lack of respect for authority. The two young men eventually become friends, and Arkady begins to see the world through Bazarov’s eyes. He also falls in love with Bazarov’s cousin, Anna Sergeyevna Odintsova.Bazarov and Arkady return to Arkady’s estate, where they meet Arkady’s father’s widow, Arkady’s half-brother Nikolai, and Fenichka. Bazarov is immediately attracted to Fenichka and begins an affair with her. Pavel becomes increasingly alarmed by Bazarov’s influence over Arkady and his own growing feelings of jealousy and insecurity. He challenges Bazarov to a duel, which Bazarov wins.Bazarov begins to tire of country life and tells Arkady that they should return to Petersburg. Arkady is reluctant to leave, but he eventually agrees. On the journey back, Bazarov becomes ill with cholera and dies. Arkady is devastated by his death. When he returns to Petersburg, Arkady finds that Anna has married another man. He decides to go back to his estate and live a simple life there with Fenichka and her son.
