Evan Hunter, born Salvatore Albert Lombino, was an American writer of crime fiction, also known under his pen name Ed McBain. He was one of the most prolific and successful authors of the twentieth century.nHunter was born in New York City, the son of Italian immigrants. He dropped out of high school at the age of sixteen and joined the United States Merchant Marine. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II, and afterwards attended college on the G.I. Bill.nHunter began his writing career in the 1950s, publishing stories in pulp magazines. He made his name in the genre with his novel The Blackboard Jungle (1954), which was made into a successful film starring Glenn Ford.nHunter continued to write crime fiction throughout his career, often using the pen name Ed McBain. He is best known for his 87th Precinct series, which follows the detectives of a police precinct in a fictional American city. The series began with Cop Hater (1956) and continued for fifty-five novels.nHunter also wrote a number of non-series books, including The Birds (1963), which was made into a classic film by Alfred Hitchcock.nHunter died in 2005 at the age of eighty-two.
