I am Esme Raji Codell, an educator, writer, and artist. I have always been interested in the power of words and stories to transform lives. As a teacher, I have seen firsthand how the right book can open a child’s eyes to new possibilities and help them find their own voice. As a writer, I strive to create stories that will entertain and enlighten readers of all ages.nI was born in Chicago and raised in the suburbs. I attended public schools and then went on to earn my BA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After college, I taught elementary school in the Chicago Public Schools for eight years. I then earned my MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts.nMy debut picture book, Ella Sarah Gets Dressed, was published in 2009. Since then, I have published several more picture books, including Alma and How She Got Her Name, which was a New York Times Best Illustrated Book of 2018. My latest book is a middle grade novel, The Show Must Go On!, which came out in 2020.nI live in Chicago with my husband and two young sons. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, spending time outdoors, and traveling.
