Edwin Arlington Robinson was an American poet who is known for his realistic poems about rural New England life. Robinson was born in 1869 in Head Tide, Maine. He grew up in a small town and attended public schools. He graduated from Harvard University in 1892. Robinson began his career as a journalist, but he soon turned to poetry. His first book of poems, The Torrent and the Night Before, was published in 1896. Robinson’s poetry is known for its dark, often depressing themes. His best-known poems include “Richard Cory,” “Miniver Cheevy,” and “Mr. Flood’s Party.” Robinson was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1922 and 1925. He died in 1935.
