David Copperfield is a novel by Charles Dickens, first published in 1850. The story follows the life of the titular character from childhood to maturity.David Copperfield is born in Blundeston, Suffolk, in 1820. His father, David Copperfield Sr., dies shortly after his birth, and his mother remarries. When David is four years old, his mother dies, and he is sent to live with his abusive stepfather, Mr. Murdstone.David is sent to work in a factory when he is nine years old. He is miserable there and runs away. He is taken in by his great-aunt, Betsy Trotwood.David attends school in Canterbury and then begins working as a clerk for an attorney. He falls in love with Dora Spenlow, the daughter of his employer. They marry, but Dora dies shortly after.David becomes a successful writer and moves to London. He meets Agnes Wickfield, the daughter of his friend and mentor, Mr. Wickfield. They fall in love and eventually marry.The novel ends with David’s reflections on his life. He has achieved happiness, despite all the hardships he has faced.
