Captain John Smith was an English adventurer and writer who was one of the founders of the colony of Virginia. He led an expedition up the Chesapeake Bay in 1607 and wrote an account of his travels, which was published in 1608 as A Description of New England. This work was one of the first to describe the region and helped to promote English settlement there.Smith was born in Lincolnshire, England, in 1580. He left home at an early age and traveled to Europe, where he fought in wars in Hungary and the Netherlands. He also spent time as a prisoner of war in Turkey. In 1606, he was recruited by the Virginia Company of London to help establish a colony in the New World.Smith sailed to Virginia in 1607 and was soon elected president of the colony. He explored the Chesapeake Bay region and helped the colony to survive its early years. In 1608, he was wounded by an Indian arrow and returned to England.While in England, Smith wrote A Description of New England, which was published in 1616. In this work, he described the natural resources of the region and encouraged English settlement there. He also wrote several other works, including The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles (1624).Smith returned to Virginia in 1614 and married Pocahontas, the daughter of a Native American chief. He later led an expedition to the Chesapeake Bay region and explored the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers. He returned to England in 1616 and died there in 1631.
