Amy Tan is an American writer whose works explore the lives of Chinese-American women.nTan was born in 1952 in Oakland, California, to Chinese immigrants. Her father, John Tan, was a Baptist minister, and her mother, Daisy Tan, was a homemaker. Tan attended Catholic school and then public high school. She received a B.A. in English and linguistics from San Jose State University in 1974 and an M.A. in linguistics from Stanford University in 1976.nTan’s first novel, The Joy Luck Club, was published in 1989. The book was a bestseller and was adapted into a film in 1993. Tan’s other novels include The Kitchen God’s Wife (1991), The Hundred Secret Senses (1995), Saving Fish from Drowning (2005), and The Valley of Amazement (2013).nTan has also written two children’s books, The Moon Lady (1992) and Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat (1994), which were adapted into an animated television series. In 2001, Tan published a collection of essays, The Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings.nTan has received numerous awards for her work, including the National Book Award for The Joy Luck Club and the PEN/Faulkner Award for The Hundred Secret Senses.
