Kidney Stones: Diagnosis and Treatment

Categories: DoctorHealthMedicine

To determine if you have kidney stones, a doctor will perform multiple tests to identify their location, type, and size. To determine the type of kidney stones, a doctor will order a blood test. This test will help differentiate between calcium and uric acid stones based on the substance levels in the blood. For patients who have reoccurring kidney stones, a urine test is usually ordered.

This test is key in determining if the patient is excreting too many stone-forming minerals or too few stone-preventing nutrients and substances (‘Kidney stones’, 2019).

An analysis of passed stones is performed on all patients with kidney stones, but is more commonly seen done with patients who constantly have kidney stones.

The analysis of passed stones test examines the makeup of the kidney, in hopes of learning how to prevent more from forming. All of these tests work hand in hand with identifying the causes of kidney stone formation, so that the doctor can identify a preventative course of treatment for the patient.
