In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein the creature in the novel created by Victor Frankenstein is influenced by wanting to be accepted by society and companionship. When the creature is neglected by Victor he runs away and finds himself at a village where he experiences negative feedback by his presence. ”One of the best I entered; but I had hardly placed my foot within the door, before the children shrieked, and one of the women fainted. The whole village was mused; some fled, some attacked me, until, grievously bruised by stones and many other kinds of missile weapons” (Shelley 32).
The village people were scared of the creature before he could even walk in. The creature was looking for somewhere to feel welcomed and they turned him away without giving him a chance. When the creature was chased away by the villagers he came across a hovel in the woods where he stayed and discovered a family. “ I discovered the names that were given to some of the most familiar objects of discourse; I learned and applied the words, “fire,” ”milk,” “bread,” and “wood.
” I also learned the names of the cottagers themselves. The youth and his companion had each of them several names, but the old man had only one name which was “father.” The girl was called “sister,” or “Agatha;” and the youth “Felix,” or “brother,” or “son.”(Shelley 34).
During the stay at the hovel the creature started to learn and speak and became familiar to the family from afar. Even after being turned down by the villagers he still had hope in this family and thought they were going to be different.
In desperation of wanting to introduce himself to the family he realized that he had to become familiar with their language first. After the creature became familiar with the language he finally decided to introduce himself to the family. They turned him away and beat him just like the villagers did. And this is what drove him to want Victor to create a female companion life him .
“What I ask of you is reasonable and moderate; I demand a creature of another sex, but as hideous as myself: the gratification is small, but it is all that I can receive, and it shall content me. It is true, we shall be monsters, cut off from all the world; but on that account we shall be more attached to one another”(Shelley 44). The creature wanted Victor to create female version of him so he’d have someone in the world so he wouldn’t feel alone and only fulfill his needs. Although he wasn’t accepted by society he still didn’t want to be lonely. The creature in the novel just wanted to be accepted by society and companionship but yet everyone turned him down and treated him badly and in the end all he wanted was a friend.
