This report summarizes our group project on how construction affect people's mental health at the intersection of Warden and Eglington. It is related to the theme of happiness in Unit One.
The issue happens during construction time, whoever passes that area have waited lots of time in traffic jams and feel stressed, while facing noise and dust. Because of that situation, people's feelings affect their mental health, and it is the main issue. The Eglington and Warden Intersection can affect any body; seniors, commuters, employees, pedestrian and even children.
I am personally interested in this problem because when I come to college, I also have to pass this area and I usually get delayed for having to wait for a lot of time to cross the intersection: As a consequence, I am often late to class. Furthermore, other people should care about the construction because In addition, it increase traffic volume in residential street, which are used as alternative route to avoid the congested intersection.
To learn more about the issue, we decided that Elham would take photos around the construction area, and Nadeeka would interview people passes by while and Wing would take notes of the people's answers. We interviewed two students going to Ashtonbee campus, one employee who works near the construction site, a senior lady crossing the traffic lights, and one mother pushing her baby in a baby carriage. Then we learnt from our interviewees lots of problems; for example, one of Ashtonbee student said that he had experienced late arrivals to college.
Similarly the senior lady said, that some time she could not find the isolated safe areas sidewalk because some areas had a closed sing and she could not walk easily due to the uneven ground. Next, we interviewed the mother, who said that whenever she crossed that intersection, her child coughed and sneezed because the child was allergic to dust. Finally we waited two to three hours at that intersection and observed that it takes a long time for traffic to move, and people looked very anxious, especially seniors.
My recommendation to address the problem is to switch construction hours to night time [10pm - 6am] for example. This solution will help people, reduce traffic, stop student from getting late to college. Moreover, people will not inhale dust, and they will not experience throat infections. In addition, seniors can easily walk passes that intersection without noise and clear road signals. My back home experience helped me to think of this solution. Municipal government should provide funds for implement this solution.
I learned from this project, that people's feeling has affected their mental health because construction has always given stress to their lives. I contribute my time to go for a field trip and I am satisfied interview people. Next time, I will participate in three or more field trips to get more information of what affect the community and use graphs.
