The topic I’m writing about is, Do Facebook users achieve better grades in college? Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and co- workers.
Facebook is a big distraction. You got games, funny videos, drama, shows/movies, and of course friends. You can go from doing your work and reading your text book to getting on Facebook because your friend tagged you in a video.
Next thing you know, you been on Facebook for 2 hours, and forgot to finish your homework. This can also happen in class. Instead of listening to the professor talk, and take the notes you need, you are on Facebook talking to friends. Now you don’t have the stuff that’s needed to get a good grade not the assignments and test because of the distraction of Facebook. Karpinski focused on the relationship between time spent on Facebook and the academic performance of students San Miguel, (2009).
He added the overall finding indicated ‘more time on Facebook equals slightly lower grades. In Karpinski’s study the regular Facebook user had a GPA of 3.0 to 3.5, while the rare Facebook user had a GPA of 3.5-4.0. You can pretty much see4 the big difference.
The Area and Population Impacted most by your Research Topic would be academics and the younger generation. In the U.S. as of January 2018, during the survey period it was found that 58.3 million U.
S. Facebook users were between 25 and 34 years old (The Statistics Portal).
Societal elements contribute to such outcomes would be lack of sleep because of Facebook use. Facebook users tend to lose a lot of sleep over Facebook. So here is the big problem with that. When you lose sleep, you start to have problems with your body. Lack of sleep can cause foggy thinking and poor concentration (Shelley D Hershner and Ronald D Chervin). That means homework and studying is way out of the question. When you really think about it, how many do you know would be able to stay focus in school with only 5 hours of sleep? Not likely going to happen.
My theorist is Zack Zuckerberg because he talks about how fb is always used and the qualities and everything with Facebook. He was the one who created it in the first place. His more popular crowed is with the younger generation.
Facebook is only an electronic communication between human but unfortunately it has become an addiction for all. The impact of Facebook can either be good or bad on university students and in their academic activities. Even though a closer look on the real impact of Facebook reveals that it leads to several problems in university students academic performances. Today Facebook is somehow destroying the future and academic carrier of university students. At the same time also intended to find the significance of use of Facebook by University students in their academic success with the help of a survey conducted to collect the data among more than 250 students of different Universities in Sri Lanka.
The GPAs of college students who checked social media sites (primarily Facebook) frequently throughout the day were not different from those of infrequent social media checkers, despite the higher perceived distraction for continuous checkers. Another recent study that adopted a mixed-methods approach, also questioned the direction of the relationship, reporting that students who struggled academically were more likely to increase Facebook activity level as they used Facebook to cope with frustrations in studying. Given the inconsistent results and the necessity of triangulating multiple data sources, our first research goal is to examine the relationship between students’ academic performance and Facebook use, taking into account the frequency of checking, time spent in Facebook, and activities on Facebook through automatically tracked data.
It was stated that Facebook was the most common social sites used by medical students in Jazan University, and the favorite service of social sites for students was science and education. Gender and being in the academic year were two factors affecting the use of social sites, where gender was a significant factor affected using of Facebook and WhatsApp, while the academic year influenced using of WhatsApp. The social media caused the decrease in the academic performance of students and hours of social sites usage and usage during lecture affected the academic performance of students significantly. Also, social media has both positive and negative effect on the social life of students.
I wrote a paper stating how Facebook users do not achieve better grades in college. To conclude, Facebook users do not get better grades in college because the people who use Facebook spend most of their time on Facebook instead of focusing on school. Facebook users will spend an average of 35 minutes a day, totaling 1 year and 7 months in a lifetime (SocialMediaToday). In order to get better grades/keep them, you have to focus on school first and don’t stay up on Facebook all night and miss out on sleep. You also have to work hard and study, meaning paying attention in school when your professor is teaching.
