Implicit Association Test and Race

I discovered the Harvard-hosted implicit Association test (IAT) to be really fascinating and it appeared to be rather precise on my part. I took the race test and the one that checks how you feel about males vs. ladies in liberal arts and sciences. In the race test is showed that I choose, or I like to say, that "I'm more comfy" around African American individuals than around European American individuals. It was simple for me to find out why my ratings showed me leaning toward the African American culture because I am African American and I can associate with African American individuals.

It was strange seeing negative words connected to African American and I discovered myself sometimes knowing that great need to opt for European American however, I just didn't wish to select that African American would be nasty and I seemed to get compliant and refused to associate those labels that I identified as bad. Simply put, I would choose to get the response incorrect that to inspect that specific box.

It was an "eye opening" project and I truly enjoyed it. After I had time to process it, I kind of chuckled at myself about it. I know that a few of that added to me being raised in the South and my childhood of "how" white people or European American's should not be relied on all the method, which some leaning more toward European males must not be relied on.

Although, a few of my closest co-workers are European American males, I guess when things are taken into your mind year after year and day after day by individuals that you love and trust and appreciate subconsciously you begin believing that method.

I think that it is a slight type of bias on my part and I prepare on working on my thinking towards European American's and I'm genuinely going to attempt to drop my wall or guard when I'm around them. As far as the results to the liberal arts and science piece again, I believe that it's simply a mindset of what fields of studies that a lot of genders' are related to. I grew up with primarily women instructors in everything however, math or science.

It just seemed right and I found on this particular test that I was really getting the answers wrong because it just worked out that way. To me it seemed to be a more “safer” and more comfortable test than the race one. In my opinion, most people do not want to be labeled as a racist or prejudice toward race but, it’s probably true that right now more men are in the science field than the arts field at least in my area. Again, I found the tests to be very engaging and if people really take the test seriously in some ways it could be a measurement for people to change their thought patterns related to certain prejudice about several different situations.
