How Important Are Leadership Qualities in an Organization

n the article “Leadership challenges in health care organizations: The case of Iranian hospitals” states that leadership is a long-term process where you influence people toward a mission and goal of a group or organization. Studies have showed that most problems of health care systems are due to poor leadership and communication. Poor leadership could lead to a lot of issues, for example, reducing effectiveness, increasing cost, and causing conflict among the staff. The participants in the study that was conducted in hospitals in Iran were hospital managers working in different managerial levels.

The average range of people interviewed was forty to fifty-nine years old. According to the results, the leadership challenges in Iran’s hospitals were classified into five main categories which include organizational structure, issues related to the leaders, context, human resources, and work nature. Successful leaders pay attention to the cultural, ethnic, social and gender-based differences.

David Reyes found that the shortage of human resources and inadequate human resources were leadership barriers. To improve employees’ performances, he proposed to have empowerment programs, rewards, and evaluation systems (Ghiasipour, Mosadeghrad, Arab and Jaafaripooyan, 2017). The article “Adaptive Leadership in Times of Crisis” states that Ronald Heifetz defines adaptive leadership as specifically about change that enables capacity to thrive in crisis environments. Adaptive leadership is one key type of leadership that helps in a crisis and it is also used to address global challenges.

If we stop and look back at Katrina, we can learn a lot about leadership and the lack of. Katrina killed one thousand eight hundred and thirty-three people and affected five hundred thousand livelihoods, which caused a lot of people to question leadership. The information gap made it harder to official explanations to displace rumors. Federal Emergency Management Agency learned from their mistake and switched to social media Web tools in 2008. As leaders, you must be capable of adapting to the unexpected and be prepared to lead (Hayashi and Soo, 2012). Having good leadership skills are very important in the medical field because you are never working alone.

The article “Effective Medical Leadership in Times of Emergency” talks about how leadership is not only about the leader himself but having the qualities of communication and negotiation to work well with others. Shirley and Mandersloot described how working together as a team in the intensive care unit of the Royal London Hospital after the first suicide bombing had a successful outcome because of how well they worked together. Performing in crisis circumstances is a more elevated amount of unpredictability which requires fast decision-making abilities. When you are trying to strengthen your team, medical leaders should address these three aspects: the anti-chaos effect, the “big picture” effect, and rest and debriefing effect. The anti-chaos effect is where you create order in your team. The “big picture” effect is where you share with your team the whole picture not just sugar coat it. Rest and debriefing effect is where the leader needs to make sure his or her staff has had time to rest and re-charge (Gilad, Hershkovich, Kreiss, Zimlichman 2016).

A leader needs to always be prepared for any situation. Always expect the unexpected and be prepared for any situation. Having poor leadership skills can make the crisis much worse than it already is (Tafra-Vlahović, 2013). In today's competitive business environment, developing crisis leadership competencies is mandatory. Given the prevalence and cost of crises as described above, few can reasonably argue against the need for more effective leadership at all levels of organizations. When I become a leader in my profession someday, I need to serve as a role model, be passionate, listen and communicate effectively, and offer rewards and recognitions. As a role model, I need to walk the walk and talk the talk. An example of being passionate would be to get them something nice for their birthday. There are several ways to show that you are listening and that I have an open line of communication I could ask them about their customs. Another way is to make sure that if their kids play sports that they are off work, so they can go see their kids play. This might take a lot of negotiations to get the shifts covered, but as a leader, it would be necessary. Some rewards and recognition that I could do would get them a gift card to somewhere they like to go eat or shop. I hope that I will make a good leader someday.
