Ever since I was in high school I had a vision for myself and the life I wanted to lead. This vision included being a leader and inspiring those around me to see more than their present situation. I feel that the best way for me to execute these goals is to pursue a career in the field of counseling. My life experiences have been shaped by my mentors who helped me get to where I am today. One of my top goals in life is to receive a Ph.
D. in counseling and to do so by staying committed, driven, and goal-oriented.
My goal to pursue a career in the field of counseling has been a part of my plans since I was in high school. From my first job to my current position, the majority of my work and volunteer experience has involved counseling. To know that I can make a positive impact in someone’s life is rewarding for me.
Throughout my life when troubled times arose I sought help from counselors. I wanted to be sure that I was seeking the proper advice that would help me out of those troubling times.
I was excited to choose counseling as my graduate degree because of its varied and challenging nature within a professional setting. The responsibilities of the profession involve but are not limited to, counseling, testing and assessment, behavioral intervention, and classroom observation. A counselor never knows exactly what the day will include, much like my current position as a Social Worker.
From this experience, I know that spontaneity and high energy are vital for my growth and satisfaction within my career. Counseling can offer the right individual a rewarding career path in a health profession that is growing. It requires a strong desire to interact with people and exceptional communication skills. Choosing to become a professional counselor is a commitment to yourself, to others, and to society as a whole.
As an undergraduate, I dedicated my best efforts toward my education and as a result, I graduated from the University of Mississippi with my B.S in Social Work. I soon attained full-time employment as a Social Worker, where I continue to volunteer on various weekends and holidays. Practicing Social work gave greater insight on the field of counseling My main responsibilities were to aid children in learning and carrying out daily living skills, counsel them in their relations with peers and adults, serve as a responsible role model, and to work closely with other coworkers, such as therapists and educators implementing the Center’s programs. All of this has proven to be an invaluable learning experience.
Volunteer work has also been an activity that I like to include in my life. During my undergraduate career I served as a volunteer, mentoring gifted children through local facilities. Helping a person realize his or her own potential gives me a strong sense of accomplishment. Both of these experiences have been emotionally rewarding.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the pleasure of working with those from different backgrounds. I’m able to maintain those relationships by being respectful, kind-hearted, and a nonjudgemental person. The most exciting thing about career choice is you can always relate to someone’s situation and to do so by simply by saying “I can relate and I am here for you” will help break down the wall and let those you want to help in. During my undergraduate career, I gained many friends that were from different cultures and I was able to learn different things from them. Attending the flagship university helped me grow and love other cultures. I have great respect for cultural diversity because god created all of us equal and we are all human. For me it doesn’t matter what gender, race, ethnicity you are it’s about what’s in the inside. One of the key aspects of showing respect for cultural diversity is showing that you care. It is important that the individual you are helping or working with understands that you care and you can relate.
Although life can be overwhelming and stressful at times it is always best to smile and treat others kindly. Stress is such a considerable part of everyone’s daily life. Between stress in the workplace, to issues at home, the effects of stress and how they can be detrimental to the individual are genuine. Some of the ways I deal with emotional reactions in my life is simply by preparing, taking control of the situation, and also maintaining control over the situation.
Your emotions are affected when you say something to yourself. Words may express your sensation. And how you name it will affect your response. Keep away from careless language. Pick your words attentively when you talk to yourself. Avoid telling yourself things that you refuse to feel. Constant usage of negative words makes you feel inadequate and defeated. I always try to remember that my emotions come and go. My emotions are always responding to an external factor; stimulus. Learn to cultivate a sense of approval and gratefulness on any circumstances or problems that arise. Anyone can learn something valuable from the people and challenges that present themselves.
I hope that by sharing my activities and goals, I have been able to give you a glimpse into the person I am and what I hope to achieve. I have included what I have felt to be the most significant influences on my career choice, my experience with culture diversity, and how I react to stressful situations in my life. My overall objective is to make my clients feel welcomed, safe, and encouraged. Together with your rigorous academic program and support, I believe I can do that as a member of your prestigious university.
