How Bullying Affected Me and What I Did About It

About this essay

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines bullying as the way “to treat (someone) in a cruel, insulting, threatening, or aggressive fashion.” Although it may seem easy to define bullying behavior, it does not always fit the classic stereotype of the older boy beating up his smaller classmate. This world is not a happy one; instead, it is full of anxiety, depression, sadness, and loneliness. Bullying can be the cause of any one of these – or, for one thirteen-year- old girl sometimes even feel like the end of the world.

I was a victim of bullying.

I love school, but somehow it became the worst place in the world. Here I am going to tell you a little story on how I (despite the difficulties) could overcome bullying. I was born in a city called Camaguey in Cuba. When I was thirteen years old, my mother told me that she was going to take me to Spain with her. She had been living there for nine years already.

It is tough to grow up away from my mother; it was always a challenge for me. I was excited about moving in with my mother. I had missed her so much during all these years.

On October twenty-eight, 2013, I took a plane, and I flew to Madrid, Spain. It was a long way – almost ten hours. I finally was with my mom. In September of the same year, school started. I remember feeling so nervous about going back to school. Paradoxically, I was happy because I loved school.

I did not have any family or friends there, so I did not know anyone. I eventually found myself in a classroom full of people. I was excited to start doing some work, but something just wasn’t just right. People started treating me strangely.

They would like to criticize me for the fact that I was from a different country. First, I thought it was normal – that they weren’t used to new people; but honestly, I felt confused about it. It got worse after a few days. They blamed me for things that I never did.

The lousy treatment increased, and they started to call me names, made fun of my personality, my accent. They would isolate me from their friend groups, and people would ignore I tried to tell the teachers what was happening and somehow, was used against me, and I scolded for “bringing it upon myself.” Life had not gone as smoothly as I thought it would have. Problems chased me, and I made several mistakes. I didn’t want to go to school or do homework or anything that included me going near or see anyone from school. I started to get bad grades.

I was failing five of my classes. On Valentine’s Day weekend, I stayed home, and I ended up falling asleep early at around 8 p.m. Later, I was woken up by voices and footsteps. I quickly opened my blinds to see girls covering my house with toilet paper and writing horrible things about me on my window.

The next day, our neighbors said a couple of vehicles were damaged. My name was being sent around as the one who did it. I said to myself, “this is enough” I got courage and went to see my parents to tell them about everything. We went to the neighbor’s house and asked them or a copy of their security camera.

The next day we went to talk to the school director, and she arranged a meeting with these girls’ parents. With this proof, we could show the school what they had done. As a result of what they did; they ended up expelled. Bullying can take many forms, but all types of bullying cause harm. I know that there are several ways that you can use to prevent bullying. I chose to tell my parents and accept their help. We might think that it’s nothing but, in reality, this is a severe problem.

Eventually little by little, I had managed to recover and, although facing depression and hatred from people, I began to stick up for myself. Life is unfair sometimes, but, there is always a chance for tomorrow. A few years later, I moved again; to Miami, USA. I went to school and started to make friends, my grades went up, and I was finally feeling better. I began to go out and meet new people. Now, five years later, I have a beautiful baby boy and an awesome husband. I will be able to teach my son to look up for him and others. I will show him about self and mutual love, and that there is no fun or necessity in harming others.
