The history of Christmas starts over 4000 years ago. This christmas traditions were celebrated many time before Jesus was born. Since old times, the Spanish people have celebrated the coming of winter with a very special tradition called Hogueras. With influence of the Roman holiday of Saturnalia and the Northern European tradition of a Yuletide celebration, the Spanish celebrated the Winter Solstice by jumping over the fire, as a way to protect themselves against illnesses in the new year.
This was very popular in Granada. As the Christian religion spread during the Middle Ages, Hogueras tradition lost popularity as many any other pagan traditions. Christmas dinner is the biggest and most important meal of the year in Spain and people use to eat more extravagantly than they do in normal days. Eating lobster and other kind of seafood is very common at Christmas times. A fish soup often makes up one course. Main courses might be roasted lamb, the traditional turkey, suckling pig, accompanied by assorted cheeses. A popular kind of candy in Spain is turron, which is an almond nougat candy. The meal is finished with a glass of cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, and perhaps a cup of espresso or Spanish brandy. Other traditional dishes are “Christmas turkey with truffles”, “garnish” and “stock”.
