Tafl (hnefatafl), chaturanga, and chessare different and unique in their own ways. But they all have similarities as well. Hnefatafl was originated in Scandinavia and became a game of the Greeks. In its Scandinavian form, hnefatafl was taken through trade and invasion to the British Isles, to Iceland, France, Germany, Ukraine and to Greenland. It’s traveled all around Europe and has changed through time. Throughout the twentieth century, more and more has been rediscovered about the game.

Chaturanga was played on an 8×8 uncheckered board, called ashtapada.

The board sometimes had special markings, the meaning of which are unknown today. It has numbers 1-8 and a-h to strategize your moves when you play a game. It was an ancient Indian game that started most board games.

The history of chess goes back for more than 1000 years. By far out of the three board games it is my favorite. Chess was created by Muslims, I thought that was very interesting because I’m Muslim and I did not know that.

It started being played around Europe and throughout time in the 19th century it started getting played a lot. Tournaments and people all around the world started competing against each other. Since then we’ve seen generations of the greatest chess players to ever walk on the face of the planet, such as Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov, and Magnus Carlsen. Crazy to think how they think when they play the game, pure geniuses, it amazes me.

There are many striking differences between chaturanga and modern chess and with hnefatafl .

Based on the limited information available, one major change is that the power of the queen has been drastically increased, which is different from chess and hnefatafl. But something really similar about all of them is the board. It’s usually 11x11 and there’s a certain strategy in each game, like coordinates for a reason. The way they look at it is 1-11 and a-h in chess and that's very similar to chaturanga and hnefatafl. The mechanics of the games are similar and unique in their own ways. The origin of the games are to protect the king and queen. I noticed if you don’t protect the highest pieces on the board, you’ll lose quickly. Knowing the history of the each game lets you know how important it is to protect the strongest pieces on the board. The perception of each game definitely lets you know how to move each piece while being very difficult to play hnefatafl and chaturanga. The knights and bishops, chariots and elephants, and warriors and single warlord all have a different role in each game. They’re similar by helping out the high pieces but don’t play the same roles exactly because each game is obviously different.

I loved chess the most because I grew up playing it and have been playing it all my life. Chaturanga was very different feel whenever I played my brother in it. It was like chess in a way so when we played we caught on real quick. The hardest game though was hnefatafl. It was so hard to get at first but once we got used to it, we caught on very fast. The hardest in my opinion was hnefatafl because it was just confusing to learn from the spot. At least chess and chaturanga were similar to each other and I think that's why I caught on so fast with my brother since we both played chess. I loved playing all three board games because they’re all different in a way that makes each game unique and its history. It’s changed so much and we get caught up with so much technology, it was good to sit back and play some board games even though they were on a computer it took me back to my childhood.
