Different empirical studies on the achievements at different levels of school have indicated that there is a significant difference in the knowledge and skills learned at the high school and college level. College level offers students with advanced skills in performing professional skills that cannot be offered at the high school level. Apart from academic work, colleges also offer students with an opportunity to broaden their minds in terms of interaction and becoming independent of themselves. This paper, therefore, compares and contrasts high school and college with the main focus of persuading the reader that students are better than their high school counterparts.
The first advantage of a college education over a high school education lies with the high chances of finding better employment opportunities when someone is a college graduate. Employers will easily employ individuals who are from college rather than from high school, since in their understanding and truthfully they have more knowledge and experience that relates to a particular job (Pleasantville High School, 2000).
College graduates are professionals who when employed are expected to work professionally and show out their experiences without mistakes. However, if employers go for employees who are individuals from high school it is likely that they will fail in their work and have mistakes. Contrarily, in high school, there is no such thing as specialization on a particular career. Learning is basically for general knowledge and it is not geared towards career development or finding employment. In the various instances in which an individual who has just gone through high school looks for a job, they are likely to be employed as casuals, given the responsibilities that do not require knowledge know-how.
Therefore, an individual from high school will be subjected to low pay compared to an individual from college who will be handsomely paid as a professional. Professionals also have the advantage of being part of a recognized union that monitors their working conditions.
The second advantage of college over high school is the idea of a college graduate gaining more advanced knowledge that can be applied in daily life to solve personal or community problems. It is not possible for an individual from high school to have knowledge that can be used to solve problems on a community level. On a personal level, the knowledge gained from college can help the graduate in coming up with a self-employment venture in which this individual will earn his or her living from (Education Next, 2017). Instead of seeking employment from already established companies, a college graduate has the benefit of applying the learned knowledge to start up a company from scratch that will also employ other people. Additionally, college graduates have the advantage of applying scientific methods in problemsolving, which is systematic and produce positive results.
Carrying out research scientifically and systematically is a prerogative of a college graduate, and this an individual from high school cannot offer. For example, through college, an individual can graduate as a medical practitioner. A medical practitioner helps the community through diagnosing diseases and finding the various community health problems that affect people (Journal of Social History, 2007). The knowledge that a person gets from high school cannot go to the extent of helping the community find out help problems and diagnose diseases. In as much as there is an argument that college is expensive especially medical school, it is worth it. It is better to spend money to educate one person who after learning and graduating will come around and help the whole neighborhood, rather than not educating a person to the college level and missing the advantages of a professional.
It has been evident that colleges provide students with more exposure to the world and different cultures than a high school level. In a high school level, students are more likely to interact with the same students they have known since preschool or elementary school. It is, therefore, advisable to perform well at the high school level to have a chance of joining a college as this is the best place to interact with people from different cultural backgrounds including international students. Unlike high schools that restricts socialization and interactions with people, an individual student grew up in the same neighborhood, colleges offer a significant platform for interacting with people from all walks of life; thanks to the international scholarship programs that have supported all students, both rich and poor, to join international colleges of their choices (Education Next, 2006).
The level of exposure colleges offer to the student is not only significant in helping students to interact with people from different cultural backgrounds, but it also offers them with the opportunity of exploring the potential opportunities that are available in other regions of the world far from their neighborhoods. For instance, for business students, it offers them with a practical opportunity of learning about the actual status of various global markets through primary data they collect from students from different countries. It is necessary for most students, if not all, to strive and join colleges in order to acquire adequate exposure to what happens in other parts of the world through interactions with students from different cultural backgrounds. Most of the high school students are usually still under the care of their parents and guardians. Even if they are wise and independent, it is notable that most of the decisions they make are influenced by their parents or guardians. This implies that they still lack that capacity to gain full independence and take most of the responsibilities by themselves (Opposing Viewpoints, 2017).
Additionally, most of the high school students still operate from their parents or guardians homes meaning that they still depend on other people to access basic needs. However, this is a different case when they advance and join colleges. After high school, most of the students usually join colleges that are located far away from their neighborhoods. In such a scenario, the first challenge they meet when they join the colleges is how to cop up with life without depending on another person. The college experience has always helped the students to become responsible people by first learning how to become responsible for themselves. Colleges have also assigned students to mentors who act as their advisors. Mentors are highly trained to offer students guidance on how they should go about their academic works and participate in other extra-curriculum activities. They provide students with the opportunity to discover themselves and gain full independence, thus becoming responsible people in the society.
Therefore, it is advisable to for students to experience college life as this will provide them with the opportunity to attain self-independence and become responsible people. Written are a highlighted number of benefits why students should strive and join colleges. The paper has noted that unlike high school students, college students have the opportunity to advance their knowledge and skills in the various fields of professions and by that they set themselves well to join professional jobs such as nursing, teaching, and banking. Additionally, college students have been known to make better decisions than their high school counterparts. In terms of socialization and exposure, high school students are restricted to socialize with the same people in their neighborhood or school while college students have the advantages of interacting with students from different cultural backgrounds thus giving them an immense exposure to what is happening in different parts of the world. Finally, the paper has noted that college students learn to become responsible for themselves, versus high school students who still depend on their parents and guardians for material needs and decision-making. This paper, therefore, advises that all students should focus and advance their learning to the college level as this will offer them with great opportunities in life.
