The Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. The document announced the independence of the 13 colonies from Great Britain. Delegates that spoke and acted for the people of the colony-states are known as the Continental Congress. The war had been going strong for 442 days when the declaration came.

The Declaration of Independence was the first formal statement made in the U.S. British and colonist combat began in April 1775. During the summer of 1776 the war was going strong and the independence movement has grown.

Five men were tasked with drafting a formal statement in mid-June 1776. 3 of the 5 men are Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. The Continental Congress served as the government for the 13 colonies from 1774 to 1789. The Independence Day holiday has been a federal holiday since 1941. Continental Congress voted for Independence on July second.

The Statue of Liberty was presented to the U.S ambassador in a formal ceremony in Paris on July 4th, 1884. Edouard de Labouaye a french historian had an idea for a statue to represent American and France’s relationship in 1865.

People in early America looked for a water route from the East Coast to the Midwest along with the Great Lakes. The Northwest territory which formed into Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin had a vast amount of timber, minerals, and fur. It tooks weeks to transfer resources but with the Erie Canal it cut the time down by a lot.

Major League Baseball’s first all-star game happened in 1933 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The game was supposed to help support the game during the worst years of the Great Depression.

In 1930 to 1933 baseball game attendance dropped by 40% and player salary fell 25%. Low income people could afford more luxurious seats as they were only 50 cents. Owners of the teams went to drastic measures to save money as they would constantly fire coaches and cut players and staff. Some teams offered sales on seats hoping that their fans would come back.

The league commissioner at that time, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, thought of a game with the best players in the National League to play the best in the American League. It helped bring back a lot of fans and at first was supposed to be a one time thing but the fans loved it so much it became an annual tradition.
