This paper will be about the Greek Gods and the Greeks myths and how they helped shaped the civilization into what we know today. The Greek empire was a wonderful time full of art and rich in culture. The civilization was great because it brought new architecture and it was an age of learning. The ancient Greeks went through many periods or ages such as the Early Bronze Age, Minoan Age, Mycenaean Age, The Dark Ages, and the Classical Period but that’s not what I’m here to talk about I’m here to spread knowledge of Myths and the Gods Poseidon and Hephaestus.
The first topic up for discussion is the Greek Gods Poseidon and Hephaestus. Poseidon is the god of the Sea and brother to Zeus, King of the Gods. He rules over the sea, earthquakes, storms, and horses. Hephaestus is the son of Zeus and Hera the wife of Zeus, he is the God of fire and Metalworking.
When he was born it was said that Hera threw him off of Mount Olympus because he was deformed because of this he was given Aphrodite to marry to prevent a war among the gods. He often made traps so that he could catch Aries and Aphrodite laying together and humiliate the two in front of the other gods. This is important because the people worship these two gods. Poseidon for safe passage across the sea and Hephaestus for help in inventing/working on projects involving fire or metal working.
Compared to the U.S today much has changed, people no longer pray to multiple gods. Also we know more about how the world works so we can predict when the catastrophes the gods “caused” when angry. I think it has changed for the better. Better because people don’t have to worry about appeasing multiple gods at the same time. This also goes with not having to worry if you or someone else has made the gods angry.
The second topic is Greek Myths the Myths I have chosen are Oedipus, this is important because this myth is also a play. Oedipus is about a prince who is left to die after birth because a prophet by the name of Tiresias told his parents that he would murder his father and marry his mother well the shepherd, who they left him with to die, feels bad for the child and sends him to another kingdom where the king and queen adopt him as their own. He grows up and his adoptive parents sent him on his way because he was not born of noble birthright so he couldn’t inherit anything. On his way he meets his father, but he does not know that it is his father, they fight and he kills his father. He gets into the kingdom he was born in and the queen says that she will marry anyone who can banish the Sphinx, Oedipus answers the Sphinx’s riddle and banishes it and, the queen true to her word marries her son unwittingly and they have four kids. His kids names are Antigone, Ismene, Eteocles, Polynices, because he kills his father and marries his mother unwittingly famine and drought plague the land. He is the cause and doesn’t know it so he declares that whoever did it will be banished from the kingdom, he finds out he is the cause, takes the pin off of his robe and gouges his own eyes out and then asks his brother Creon to banish him from the kingdom.
Comparing Oedipus to the U.S today we still have flawed leaders. We still have scandals, although they may not be as extreme they still exist. Some scandals include the Watergate scandal, Teapot Dome scandal, Whiskey Ring scandal, and the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky Affair. Even though our leaders can be flawed I think things have changed for the better. I mean no more gouging your eyes out because you accidentally married your mom and had four kids with her. There is no more need for people to be killed because someone said that if you don’t kill your kid he will kill his father and marry his mother. Also it’s better because we don’t have kings and queens that rule us we get to elect a new leader every four years.
So we have gone over Poseidon and Hephaestus and how they affected the people of Greece. Poseidon was the reason they had earthquakes and storms. While Hephaestus was the reason they could work with metal and fire. We have also gone over the myth of Oedipus Rex and that he was abandoned at birth because of a prophecy. A shepherd felt bad for him and brought him to a neighboring kingdom where he was adopted later sent off. While he was traveling he met his father on the road not knowing it was his father he killed him and went to the kingdom he was born in. He then defeated the Sphinx and unwittingly married his mother and had four kids with her.
