Great Pacific Garbage Patch: Analyzing How Ocean Pollution Affects Everything

Ocean pollution is one of many different pollutions and is very dangerous to species. One thing that is influencing ocean pollution is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is one of the biggest things that I have ever heard of on this planet. This Pacific Garbage Patch is in the Pacific close to the state of Hawaii, South, and North America. “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is said to be almost twice the size of Texas: enormous at nearly 440,000 square miles.

” It just boggles my mind that I do not know how all that trash gets in the ocean. This trash and plastic in the Pacific Ocean is now causing the oceans to acidify. This ocean pollution is very dangerous in the environment and could cause harm to all species even on land. People in the U.S. are not throwing trash in the ocean, but are letting trash and plastic going into the Pacific by littering, through sewage from your toilets, and waterways leading into the Pacific Ocean.

This is causing the Pacific to acidify faster than ever and can cause species to die on land and in water soon.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is one of the biggest trash patches we know about right now in the ocean. This is why Mary Crowley says, “We want to make this everyone’s problem, and everyone’s solution,” because this is expanding and becoming more of a problem. Mary Crowley is right about this because this garbage is getting worst and if we do not do something about it before it gets worse animals are going to start going extinct.

Plastic is one of the main reasons why the oceans are contaminated.

Plastic has something in it that will not break down which causes it to stay in the ocean. Plastic in the ocean can not break down causing the chemicals in it to expand throughout our oceans. “Approximately 90 percent of the visible debris floating in the Pacific Ocean is plastic.” I would expect that there would be more trash in the ocean than plastic, but a lot of the things we use in our lives have some sort of plastic. This plastic is harder on the oceans because they can not break down. Plastic actually takes several years to biodegrade making it float in the ocean for that period of time. This is a challenge mainly because this is more of what is causing ocean pollution because it can not break down making it a risk to life. Plastic is also a risk since it cannot be broken down for several decades it picks up toxins allowing it to mess up the marine animals food chains and soon to our food chain. That much toxins in an animal that we could someone get leads to us getting those toxins affecting all life. This plastic in the ocean comes from humans’ sewage, boats, waterways, and ultimately our trash.

People in the U.S. are throwing trash in the ocean and many do not even know even know that they are. They are throwing trash in the ocean by through sewage, trash in waterways leading out to the ocean, boats that can fire missiles, and themselves throwing trash in the ocean. Most of the trash humans throw in the ocean contain plastic, such as throwing grocery bags, water bottles, pens, all different sorts of plastic coming from beaches and other parts near the ocean. People are just not thinking about what will happen if they don’t pick up their trash because somehow it gets in the ocean. Waterways have trash in it coming from sewage and trash being picked up by the current that goes to the ocean.

Waterways have a big impact because they have a lot of contamination in their water from trash and sewage. Waterways carry sewage from toilets and pick up trash left on the ground by humans that eventually lead to the ocean. “Approximately 20 percent of the material dredged from rivers and harbors is dumped into the ocean; nearly 10 percent of that material contains toxins, including heavy metals, hydrocarbons and pesticides.” Contamination in waterways is a big deal because one fifth of trash that goes to the ocean is washed down through waterways and when the waterway ends it goes directly in the ocean. This is causing the trash to somehow get to the garbage patch making the garbage patch bigger in size. Another reason that waterways are important is because our sewage is dumped in through there that also lead to the ocean. Our sewage is a big contaminator to the ocean. Our waste goes through pipes that lead to waterways or directly into the ocean thereby contaminating our oceans and rivers and if we are contaminating our rivers the water that is in the rivers goes to the ocean as well. These rivers are also a source of our water which affects people everywhere. “In the 1970s and 80s, several industries were allowed to dump chemical waste underwater.” This was a big time period for ocean pollution because this is more or less when our sewage started going into the ocean. Navy boats have a bad impact on the ocean and also the marine animals within the ocean.

Our Navy boats and other countries NAVY boats shoot missiles causing animals to have problems with other animals concerning listening and mating. Navy boats fire missiles and when they fire missiles the sound waves of the shot are picked up by several animals in the ocean, but mainly whales and dolphins. This is causing the dolphins and whales to not having their sense of hearing and causing them to not be able to mate with other whales and dolphins. All of this leads to how this is a problem for future generations of the ocean, animals, and humans.

The contamination of the ocean affects the water we drink, animals we eat, animals and humans eating habits, and the ocean acidifying. The toxins from all the plastic in the ocean is consumed by animals which then leads to them having toxins which then leads to us eating them which means that we would have the toxins which would lead to us having many problems.(14) This could possibly lead to extinction of several animal species perhaps even humans. “‘Congressman Brian Baird said, “The consequences of ocean acidification may be every bit as grave as the consequences of temperature increases.’” Congressman Brian Baird is saying that if this keeps happening this ocean acidification can lead to numerous consequences like Global warming could.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is made up of plastic and trash that can harm life and helpful things the ocean provides such as air, food, and jobs, but since there is pollution in the oceans the pollution leads to catastrophic consequences including extinction. If this does not stop this could be the end of all civilization and the world.
