EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The status of WOMEN IN INDIA has been subject to many great changes over the past few millennia. From equal status with men in ancient times through the low points of the medieval period, to the promotion of equal rights by many reformers, the history of women in India has been eventful. Police records in India show a high incidence of crimes against women. The National Crime Records Bureau reported in 1998 that by 2010 growth in the rate of crimes against women would exceed the population growth rate. Earlier, many crimes against women were not reported to police due to the social stigma attached to rape and molestation. Official statistics show a dramatic increase in the number of reported crimes against women. Women have been subjected to sexual harassment at work for many years. Unite views this as a very serious issue, which needs to be addressed and eliminated in the workplace. In the same way that members should not be expected to tolerate other dangers to their health and safety at work, they should not be expected to put up with sexual harassment in any form.

The report mainly focuses on the women safety in an organization. We have chosen big bazaar as our sample study in order to know about the safety of women and how safe they feel at the place where they work with the male colleagues and with the male superiors and dealing with the male customers. Big bazaar being a hypermarket chain of Future Group and it was founded on a simple idea: Rewrite rules, retain values. This fundamental belief created a new kind of marketplace, forever transforming Indian retail. Today the core values continue to guide how they do business and improve the quality of life of the people they serve.

The research methodology consists of the sample size of 50 women employees of big bazaar, Surat. The data used in the report were both primary and
secondary data. The primary data was conducted by survey and was used for analysis and interpretation whereas, the secondary data was collected from various journals, research papers and web browsing and were used for literature review and theoretical framework of the topic

The analysis and interpretation shows that employees are more of 20-30 age groups, as the job requires more of active participation by employees. The result displays that most of the employees find the organization safe so as work with male employees and colleagues. Next the data shows the availability of basic amenities provided in an organization where auxiliary and sanitation facilities top the list. The focus area of organization is also depicted which is safety planning in most of the cases. Also it is found that it is less of male dominated. It also shows the availability of grievance cell and also that some of them are unaware regarding the same.

There are some cases, which shows that around 35% have faced or seen sexual harassment and its frequency on an average is 2-5 times. Most of the harassment takes place in verbal and visual manner. Out of the unreported incidents, most of them lack seriousness and others are afraid to report the same. Out of the reported once, most of them are investigated and in some cases punishment is also given. When it comes to reaction in case of sexual harassment’s victims, most of them are willing to support and file the case against the offender. The average level of safety is seen to be good as now day’s organizations follow various safety measures.

Women experience specific occupational health and safety problems, but their needs have not received the attention nor the protection they warrant in research, policy and program development, prevention and education efforts and compensation coverage. The concerned authority must take the strict actions against the culprit immediately when the women employees at the workplace are reporting the complaints. Safety training must be conducted by the organizations in order to make the women employees aware and Self-defense classes should be organized at the workplace or sponsored by the organization. Organizations need to ask for safety feedback from the employees in order to know the safety level in an organization. Organization should have Emergency Response Systems to record and support any emergencies across group of employees.

The word focus might be only small, but the meaning is HUGE when it comes to safety…..
