My intended major is in Graphic Design. The advances in technology and in media have created greater opportunities for those who have a passion in the arts and design such as myself. Over the years, I have found that there are so many things that I have started but have never really finished. It was not until a couple of months ago, however, that I had come to realize that I wanted to accomplish so much more and that I was committed to pursuing my career in this field.
It was from that moment on that I had decided that I came to a point in life that many people have not. I have made a firm decision to recommit myself to pursuing my dreams.
I remember when I was in kindergarten and I was into drawing and making crafts. This soon gave way to higher interests as I sensed my skill in the arts grew. It was not long before I helped design sets for our elementary school plays.
At this young age, I was already awakened to my potential in the arts and I feel this has led me to unique position that I am in now. There have been so many opportunities in life that I have not been able to take advantage of due to the competitiveness of the working environment. I believe that this experience and background of mine will help me pursue this dream.
Taking this course is only the beginning of a long journey for me. I realize that it will not be easy and I look forward to that challenge. As such, I feel that I have had several great ideas in the past and still continue to have, but have, unfortunately not been able to turn these ideas into reality. Many times, I have seen others use these ideas and create something quite successful from it. I am confident, therefore, that the rich and diverse academic community at UC will definitely be the perfect place for me to learn and be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
Given my experiences and interests in life and being a diligent student, I have always tried to incorporate my interests in art with my academics. In high school, I was part of several organizations that focused on the development of art and graphic design. I have also been asked by the school to create designs for them. Over the years, as interests and school converge, I even managed have several of the designs that I have worked on commended or awarded in several events in school. These experiences show how I have integrated my work ethic and my interest in arts in everything that I do.
I am confident that my past experiences have prepared me to not only be able to be an instrument by which this change can be affected but also to be able to inspire others to reach for their dreams as well. Prompt #2 (all applicants) Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are? The world is fast becoming a borderless place. Cultures, races, beliefs and ideologies are blend together and interact because of the growing advances in communications.
In order to succeed in this world, one needs to be able to adapt to the various cultural differences as well as be able to maintain a certain sense of individual identity. This is the advantage that I feel I can get at this fine academic institution; the training to be competitive in the global economy and at the same time the flexibility to be able to deal with the different cultures in the diverse business world. In high school, I took up a course in Graphic Communication. This was a revelation for me as I found myself not only deeply interested in this but also that I had a talent that none of my peers possessed.
My hobbies and interests may have expanded as I have grown older but art has always been my priority. Given the technological advances in the field, I feel that I can take this interest to higher levels. I believe that this is the perfect opportunity to enhance my art. Pursuing a career in Graphic Design is one of those ways by which I feel I can be the change that I want to be in this world. I am confident that in the future I can engage in something that not only encourages my personal growth but inspires others to do so as well for, as Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams…”
During my past work experiences, I have often come across as witty and amiable. Yet, I am no push over when it comes to working in a rigid environment such as when I worked on the the art projects for class. I firmly believe that I can succeed in anything that I want to as long as I work hard at it. I get things done. The job gets done faster and more efficiently as and when the objectives are clear, the strategies acceptable, and the resources are available. One such experience that is relevant to this is when I made two animated features for class and was named as the best artist for the 1st semester in College.
While I personally believe that “there is no such thing as a free lunch” and that everything a person has in life must come from hard work and perseverance, I also believe in charity. Being an individual of mixed heritage I understand the difficulties of being different and as such I believe in helping others who do not have much in life. I believe in helping people regardless of their nation, race or creed. I believe in being a better person so I can best help myself and others around me. I believe that a UC is the best place for me to turn these beliefs into realities.
