Art tunes out thinking about snow, but suddenly to his shock he sees a levitating piece of rock, hanging above their head, the size of a small car or a grand piano in the air.

Here too, Art correlates the sewage that it as poisonous as the Buddleia plant.

The novel then shifts to the present situation where Art is on the sofa holding a child in his arms. The child, who has been learning to read, pulled out a book randomly from the bookcase and keeps on asking questions. It is an old copy of a book named A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens.

Art tries to give answers to the questions of the child. Though Art does not know the correct answers for the questions of the child, he tries to manage the child with some answers. The child says, "But why, when it sounds the same, it is not the same as to run or to do or to eat? the child says. Oh, I see, Art says (Winter 225)."

Art remembers more about the Gregorian calendar so as to be able to explain it. But the child does not have the capacity to grab the meaning of it. Art laughs to himself and his chin is down into his chest while laughing. The child is yelling in delight at nothing. Sophia is banged on Iris door for asking about the terrible noise made by someone. It sounds as if someone is hammering with a stone, shifting the chairs and the tables from one place to another.

They also argue about Iris activism and Sophia's indifference once again, but automatically they fall asleep in the same make shift bed. Later Sophia goes down to the kitchen. While Sophia is eating some melon, Lux comes there to meet her. She says that she is not Charlotte but Lux. She pours out her heart to Sophia telling that she is from Croatia. Her family moves to Canada from Croatia, then moves to England to pursue an undergraduate degree in literature. She is forced to stop when she runs out of funds to pursue her degree.

Sophia then decides to tell her the real story of her son's father. It is Godfrey Gable. He as an artist is known for his painting and sculpting art. His real name is Ray, Raymond ponds. She becomes a single mother after Ray has left. Sophia loves her life very much. She considers her life as more important thing than any other and she is not ready to reconcile her family for the sake of her life.

Sophia and Charlotte discuss about Sophia's married life. She compares her life to a Double Decker bus whose steering is not with her. It is driven by someone else so also her life it is propelled by someone else. Lux says that she can keep the control of it. But Sophia replies as if she turns the wheel in one way but the vehicle goes in some other. Charlotte says that she will have to take the control of the bus routes.

But she is not aware of his death and also she forgets is addressed. She has not met Charlie for the past eight years too. This incident disturbs Sophia psychologically. After their walk look to them have passionate sex.

Then Godfrey shows a sculpture of two stones. He refers to a bird nestled in the palace and the other one to the palace itself. Sophia realizes that she is loving her. But he is very much older than her. This is depicted in the following words of Sophia. "It is stone, two stones is all it is and one with a hole in it, she sits down again, settles back into his arms like he's an armchair" (274).

Sophia and Godfrey are discussed the old story of artist Giotto. It is a space machine sent to take pictures of the stars and the shooting comet. Later she becomes pregnant with the Godfrey. She marries him with mutual consent. The military authorities came with the bulldozers and destroyed the sewage.

Hearing the bulldozer's noise, the residents came out of their houses, and protested against the process. This has been continuing in different forms.
