One thing I know and have learned more of is God’s love. Through this semester of the class Search for God, I found more and more of God’s love for me. We learned this is multiple readings such as The Creation, The Fall, Redemption, Church, Bible/Scripture, Augustine’s Confessions, and Mere Christianity. God’s love for us is never ending. Jesus wants us to be like him, to live for him, and to teach others about him. God wants the best for us, and created everything so that it leads us to him and to his love.
God created the world. In 7 days to be exact. He created everything in his image. Imago Dei which means image of God. Genesis one gives us this image of his creativity, design and his loving careful delight of what he has created. When God was creating the Earth, it was an act of love. He created everything in a specific order.
The first day he created Earth, space, time and light. The second day he created the atmosphere. On the third day came dry land and plants. Then on the fourth day he created the sea and flying creatures. The last day he created land animals and man. That man was named Adam. He then created women. That woman’s name was Eve. They could do,whatever they wished to do, but they could not eat the apple that was in the Garden of Eden. If they did not listen to God,they would sin and be punished by God.
One day a monster came to Eve and convinced her to take a bite of the apple and so did Adam. They called this the sin of adam because he failed to protect eve, he was not being faithful, and blamed God and eve for what had happened. Only when they fall from grace can they fully fall in love with each other.
The first question I asked myself was “If God loved Adam and Eve then why did he create that tree?” God isn’t going to be there with a shelter over you or come to you directly and tell you not to do something. He lets these things happen because he wants us to learn from our mistakes. It makes me think that he put that tree there because he wants us to put our trust in him ourselves. It says God commanded us to never eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil because he knew it would separate us from him. It would cause us to not rely on the Lord. Love was apart of the Lord’s plan all along. That’s exactly why he sent Jesus to save us from all of our sins. “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Romans 5:8). His love is a perfect example of what love is. It’s not based on how good we are because no human has ever been or will be perfect. He just loves us and wants us to love him back and know him in a real and living way. Jesus makes all of that possible.
Redemption means to compensate for someone’s faults or to regain possession of something in exchange for payment. When we place our faith in Christ and ask him to forgive us of our sins we get to on his righteousness. When Jesus looks at us he no longer sees our sin. For example, in sports, they show a players highlights and only show their best plays and not their mistakes. That’s kind of how God sees us after we are saved and forgiven. Jesus gave himself as a payment for our sins when he died on the cross so he could buy us back or redeem us and call us his own. In the Old Testament Gods people’s sins could only be forgiven if an animal was sacrificed in their place. Jesus was the sacrificial lamb that took our place so we could be redeemed. He really was fully God + fully man. He’s one God in 3 persons. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
We experience God’s love through the church as we meet and fellowship with other believers in Christ. They encourage us, pray for us, cry with us,laugh with us, trust with us, and do life with us. All the while we grow in our relationships with Christ together. They also help us when we are in need. Church is a community. I love when my pastor tells us to turn to a neighbor and greet one another. I get to walk around and shake hands and hug people who make me happy and know that they’re people around me who care about me. We give so much through my church. Everyone gets involved. No one gets left behind. For christmas we gather together to go to retirement home and families and sing carols. We give to people who need that extra boost. I’ve created such great friendships through my church. I met my best friend actually at my church. I’m becoming a youth leader in our youth group. Im very involved with my church and it makes my heart so big and happy and warm. I wouldn’t want to part of another one. No one is alone. Once you come through the doors you are greeted and loved and you feel so welcomed. You can always feel the lord’s presence in that building. He is healing the broken in that building. Jesus gave us one another. When going to church on sundays and wednesdays, some may be exhausted and tired and some may feel joyful, but we all know that we are their for his grace and that we aren’t giving up and he isn’t giving up on us. We come together to be forgiven. We are there for one another and Jesus is there listening to our praises and we are confessing to him are sins to like a good, conflict free life. Church is my favorite place to be.
In Saint Augustine’s Confessions, He is writing a love letter to God. It’s a praise. God makes us happy. It makes our hearts happy. When we think of the heart we think of the organ, or sentrality, and love being the main one. God is love. He wants us to love one another. And the love of God. He is the Trinity of love. God cannot love unless there is something for him to love. The Bible does not teach us that God needed the creation in order to have something to love. If that were true, he could not be fully himself without it. In his mind, the Father is the one who loves. The Son is the who is loved, and the Holy Spirit is the love that flows behind them and puts it all together. The Spirit puts together the ones who believe in God, and adopts us of that love which is the Trinity. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he is God.
C.S. Lewis knows a thing or two about love. Love can be an amazing thing. Love can also be a bad thing as well. Love is such a powerful feeling. When people fall in love they often think of themselves as in a fairy tale. They think they are “Falling in love” or “They are going to live happily ever after”. Sometimes that is the case and those things do last. But starting out maybe not so much. He talks about marriage and how each couple should know and accept and receive God together and get to know him more and more as they relationship continues to go on. Love in this second sense — love as distinct from “being in love” is not merely a feeling.
Love is something that one person has for another person. If God was a single person, then before the world was made, He was not love. To Lewis, love is will. We as humans are meant to love. It’s what we’re supposed to do.
