George W Bush Administration Response To Hurricane Katrina

About this essay

“To the extent the federal government didn’t fully do its job right, I take responsibility,” Bush

If you ask Americans their opinion on President Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina, they will have a lot to say on the subject, mostly negative. President Bush was supposed to be such a wonderful president, but everyone can see he is very unorganized and not as clever as he claims to be. I wonder if Americans are beginning to really think about their vote in the 2004 Presidential Election.

The victims of Hurricane Katrina needed immediate aid which wasn’t provided. A catastrophe like that is not something to put on your to-do list.

The hurricane hit the Gulf Coast Monday, August 29 destroying everything in its path. Every single store and house in the area was either destroyed or damaged. Thousands died and many more are missing, while our president sat in the Oval Office and thought about that he wanted for dinner.

The Weather Channel predicted when and where the hurricane would hit, so that leaves me to wonder why so many inhabitants decided to stay in their homes and wait it out.

Some didn’t have the money or transportation to leave and some didn’t want their houses to be destroyed; but if a house isn’t built sturdy enough, it will collapse. Many did try to leave, but the highways were jammed and their only option was to turn back and go home.

It has been suggested that the lack of attention was a racial issue.

That is a definite possibility but it could have also been that our president does not know how to run this country. There is no excuse for his actions, but being ignorant is a vague explanation.

One of the effects of the hurricane is gas prices. I remember a few years ago when gas was about a dollar per gallon. Then the price went up because of the war in Iraq, which didn’t need to take place, and now they have skyrocketed to an all-time high. Gas has never been this high and it can be blamed on one person.

Another effect of the hurricane is millions of dollars lost in the stock market. No one seems to care much about this aspect because at this point lives need to be saved; but the total amount of property and assets that were lost is massive. Our country runs on an eager consumer, and a sizeable amount are not able to purchase and utilize certain items. In the long run our country will be wounded because if our economy does not prosper, we do not prosper.

There is always a blessing to every tragedy. The one thing Americans learned is that we really do need to work together:

No one person can make it alone. This country was built on teamwork (as corny as that may sound) and just because we live in a high-tech world doesn’t mean we can do everything by ourselves.
