Generation Y

The long-forecast and biggest demographic shift in our lifetimes has arrived: the millennials have become the largest generation in the United States labor force. Millennials have grown up in the digital age. They show greater expertise than earlier generations with communication, media, and digital technologies." (Tolbzie, 2008.).however, also points out that, "they are also sometimes called the "Trophy Generation" or "Trophy Kids" based on the emerging trend in sports and competition to reward everyone for participation, rather than for winning.

One research study portrayed millennials as "opinionated" and they "[expect] to be heard" (Hartman, 2011). So if these are their traits as individuals, what are their traits as leaders? A study conducted by identified the differences in management values between the generations, showed that the top five values for managers of Gen Y were: family security, health, freedom, self-respect, and true friendship (Gibson, 2010) The jobs created in their place where polarized: high skill, high-wage jobs in such areas as consulting, healthcare, and business services and low-skill, low-wage jobs in healthcare support and food and personal services.

US Defense Information Technology Sector

U.S Department of Defense information technology investments have been made to meet the needs of individual projects, programs, organizations, and facilities. This decentralized approach has resulted in large cumulative costs and a patchwork of capabilities that create cyber vulnerabilities and limit the ability to capitalize on the promise of new developments in IT. (Anon., n.d.).Twenty-first century military operations need an active information environment to attain an information advantage for personnel and mission partners. To accomplish this information advantage, the whole work force must be able to access the information resources. To meet this challenge, DoD is undertaking a concerted effort to unify its networks into a single information environment that will improve both operational effectiveness and information security posture, while also achieving efficiencies that allow resources to be redirected to meet mission needs .The leaders and decision makers across DoD will have continuous access to functionality, permitting them to generate, find, practice, and share information needed to do their allotted tasks. The DoD IT Enterprise Goals are intensive on increasing mission efficiency, refining cyber security, and bringing efficiencies.

Leadership challenges related to the Multigenerational team in Defense IT sector.

Among Greek warriors leadership was based upon "a first among equals" principle. (Strayer, 1989).Such leadership was the result of a culture of equality and joint accountability. Military cultures, particularly in frontline circumstances, have highly articulated responsibilities and codes of conduct and mutual accountability. Most peer networks, whether they are military, technological, recreational, adolescent, criminal, terrorist, artistic, professional, or athletic, are initiated by persons who demonstrate the values and qualities that portray the best skills of the peer network. The visionary leaders either explicit or intuitive future (Millett, 2011). The role of the visionary leader is to imagine futures, determine what is limiting about the current, and demonstrate what is achievable in the future. Visionaries play a crucial and sometimes critical role within the military. They are often the first to see faults in common military policy, to adopt new knowhows and doctrines, and therefore, to challenge existing leadership and engrained interests abilities that illustrate the best competencies of the peer network. Therefore, unless they are capable to prove themselves within wartime, their concepts can deteriorate for decades. The challenges are especially acute and consequential within military organizations.
