In all reality, not a single person in the world is completely the same-- not even identical twins. Therefore, gender and sexuality should be taught at an early age. According to Jennifer Bryan (2012), establishing a shared and accurate language for discussions of gender (GSD) is a critical first step for pre school -12 educator and parents. In fact, it is vital to discuss gender before pre school because a child begins to have an innate sense of their gender identity between the ages of three and five.

Around this time, they also start to pick up on the subtle and not-so-subtle gender expectations in their family, their daycare, their church, and their community. According to Linda A. Hawkins, she believes that “Gender exploration is like any other exploration,” Hawkins says. “It’s like trying on different clothes. Children try on all sorts of things, hats, boots, you name it, they’ll try it on and see if they like it personally and see if they like the response they get from people.

In addition, the broad construct of gender and sexuality diversity (GSD) should also be taught at an early age. This should be taught because exploring gender identity and sexuality is part of every child’s healthy development (Hawkins). Many children are experiencing a disconnect from their gender expectation and how they truly feel. Other children may identify that their gender is actually the opposite of the sex they were assigned at birth, in which they begin indicating a transgender identity.

While some may be feeling as if they should be opposite sex, other children are stuck in the middle of of their gender expectations. This is critical because, many children begin to feel different, alone, misunderstood, and unsupported, which results negative physical and emotional outcomes (Hawkins).

Bryan (2012) believes that GSD describes the continuum of biological sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, sexual behavior and sexual identity. GSD illustrate that gender identity and sexual identity are key elements to identify all humans beings and that gender and sexuality are inherently diverse. “Diversity” is the concept of biodiversity, signifying the difference in genders and sexualities in the human species throughout the world.

In contrast to humans, there are also multiple varieties of birds. In Pennsylvania alone, there are 394 species of birds (Gross, n.d.). Throughout these birds, there are undeniable differences including size, shape, and color. They are also different because of the environment they come from. An example of two birds that are the same genus but are completely different, is a penguin and a parrot. A penguin is natively found in the cold continent of Antarctica. In contrast to the orange-bellied parrot and other birds, penguins are aquatic, flightless birds that are highly adapted to life in the water. Their distinct tuxedo-like appearance is called countershading, a form of camouflage that helps keep them safe in the water. Penguins do have wing-bones, though they are flipper-like and extremely suited to swimming. Penguins are found almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere, where they catch their food underwater and raise their young on land. (“Basic Facts”, 2016)

On the other hand, orange-bellied parrot are uncommon and they breed in Tasmania then migrate to the southern coast of mainland Australia. They are seen almost exclusively in coastal and sub-coastal areas, preferring peninsulas and islands. Saltmarshes, shore heathlands and low scrublands are preferred habitats as well as grassy areas, which can include golf courses. Due to their habitats, the orange-bellied parrot also have a different diet from a penguin. The orange-bellied parrot feeds on the ground or on low-growing shrubs, with food consisting of seeds, fruits, flowers and berries of sedges, herbaceous plants and plants that grow in salty conditions such as saltmarshes. Lastly, the most interesting thing about this bird is the males and females slightly different in appearance, however, they also have some of the same characteristics. The male has a bright grass-green head, back, and wings, fading to a yellowish-green on throat and breast, to bright yellow to the vent and under the tail. The belly has a bright orange patch, and there is a deep blue band between the eyes, bordered above by a faint blue line. The male also has bright blue on the bend of the wings. On the other hand, the female parrot is duller, with less blue and has a smaller orange belly patch. In fact, both male and females have a greyish-black bill, a dark-brown eye and greyish-brown legs (Forshaw, 2002).

In conclusion, when looking through a critical lens, you can see that humans and birds are completely similar when discussing diversity. Although humans Species are the same, they can be identified in numerous of way; as can birds. While humans can be labeled bi-sexual, queer, transgender, ect… birds can be labeled as carnivores, carnivorous, or insectivorous. With that being said, it is ok to be different.
