The Shining is a novel by Stephen King that was first published in 1977.
The novel is about a man named Jack Torrance who takes a job as the caretaker of an old hotel in the Colorado Rockies. Jack hopes that the solitude of the job will help him to finally write the great American novel that he has always dreamed of writing.
However, the hotel is haunted by spirits who drive Jack to madness. Jack’s wife and son are forced to flee the hotel as Jack descends into violence and madness.
The novel was adapted into a film in 1980, directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film is considered to be one of the greatest horror films of all time.
