After he finished his schooling, he worked as a journalist and a teacher before moving to London to become a full-time writer. He married the American poet Sylvia Plath in 1956, and they had two children. Plath committed suicide in 1963, and Hughes’s subsequent marriage to Assia Wevill ended in tragedy when she also took her own life. Hughes’s poetry is marked by an intense awareness of nature and a preoccupation with the primal and the dark side of human experience. His work often explores the themes of death, violence, and the supernatural. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1984, and he died in 1998.
