Fast Food Nation Investigation

Categories: Fast FoodFoodNation

In the book Fast Food Nation, the author is trying to convince us that no matter who you are or where you're from, as long as you have a creative mind, anyone can start a business. This is shown throughout the whole book as different fast food corporations went from nothing to something through only innovation. One example of this is the story of the McDonald brothers and how they revolutionized the fast food industry by getting rid of their carhops for an assembly line work space; taking all dishes off the menu that were eaten with a fork or spoon and replaced their plates with plastic ones (Eric 20).

The author also shows that america's culture has influenced fast food greatly. This is true because before the assembly line format of fast food today, america during the 40's was full of drive-ins. This was huge because back then, cars were still a new invention and having a car was extremely popular and sought after.

Being able to drive up to a drive-in and have workers called carhops (who were mainly females) bring you food without having to get out of your car was astonishing (Eric 17).

As the fast food craze kept on growing and growing, more people started eating out at places like McDonalds and Wendy's. These places are much more cheap and are an easy substitute than going out to somewhere more conventional, or cooking food at your own house. This kind of behavior can be very unhealthy which has been a major factor to obesity in america .

Another major point the author shows in this book later down the line is the effect fast food can have on you. E. Coli is one of the most popular infections to be recognized throughout the nation. With his in-depth research, the author provides the stories of the average everyday American who has been infected or passed away with such a horrid disease.

The author also provides the facts of Salmonella appearing in the cooking of the infamous greasy meals, "A tiny uncooked particle of hamburger meat can contain enough of this pathogen to kill you."(Eric 201). The information the author provides gives many americans the reason too think twice about what they may consume. Fast food and its eye opening facts is a reminder to the audience that not only are they hurting themselves, but that the effects are also affecting the family members and the ones who care most about the individual. What's in the meat is not only a major concern, but also a major safety issue.
