Faith Bandler Biography

Good afternoon to you who have come tonight. I would like to start by introducing myself, some of you might know me already by the name Faith Bandler. You may know me for my active role in publishing the 'YES' case for the Aboriginal question for the referendum. I would also like to start by talking a little about my background. I was a child of eight in the family born in a small community of Tumbulgum, Northern New South Wales 1919.

Growing up in a family with tremendous freedom while living with 8 other people we didn’t have much, we lived on about two to three acres — we lived in a garden. Us, with a few other islanders, were the only black around town. As I got older highschool yard of Murwillumbah was the site of harassment and racial abuse but was protected and nurtured by kindly and committed school teachers. As you may know, my father Peter Mussing was kidnapped from an islander called Ambyrn which is also known as the New Hebrides and was brought to Australia, enslaved to work on sugar plantations.

Awareness of my father's experience exerted a strong influence on Bandler, my later political activism experiencing racial exclusion while I was growing up. In my adult life, I became best known as the charismatic speaker and broadcaster, who advocated a YES' vote in the 1967 referendum, which was overwhelmingly successful, with more than 90 per cent Australia agreeing to end constitutional discrimination against Indigenous peoples.

Being well known for promoting the rights and interests of Indigenous Australians, this involvement as an Activists first started when I co-founded the Aboriginal Australians Fellowship in 1956.
