The setting 'Desiree’s Baby' by Kate Choplin's is a short story that analyze the issues of racism, prejudice and subjugation in which they experienced. The story is set in the Antebellum before the pre civil war in the late 1800s when America flourished and slavery played a significant role in people’s lives. The L’Abri Valmondes was wealthy Caucasian plantation owners who establish a high-class society and owning slaves.

At the beginning of this tragic story Monsier Valmonde discovered something as she rides along through the 'gateway' in the shadows of the big stone pillars of his plantation, where there lies a baby, who is childless at the time.

But that didn’t stop Madame she took the baby with open arm and raised as if she was her own. Madame instantly knew without a doubt that this baby was god sent she knew what type of person Desiree was, “ For the girl grew to beautiful, gentle, affectionate and sincere,-- the idol of Valmonde”.

In this scene the author uses the words”gateway' and ' big stone pillars' showing that Desiree’s past is like a shadow (flashback) because when she was first discovered she was spotted near the same big stone pillar where eighteen years later Armond Aubigny had seen her and falls in love at first sight, “as if he was strucked by a pistol shot, causing Armand’s ego to surmise him into marrying Desiree on the spot. The big stone pillars symbolizes the setting of where it all encountered from transitioning stages of her life, the unexplained past from when she was born and her acts of love.

Look at my brown hair, is it brown; and my eyes are gray, Armand, you know they are gray. So there could be a possibility that she could be biracial and not be accepted by her husband Armond.

In the elements of the dark ending in which Armond Aubigry’s reject his wife and son due to such cruelty not knowing that he is only rejecting himself, in this moment he lets it be known that he wants nothing to do with his son or wife due the potential of them both having some sort of black in their genes as if they meant nothing to him, leaving his wife to isolate herself and the baby forever.
