Empowering employees through leadership takes more than just mere monitoring and delegation. Employees, as a fact, needs to be empowered in the workplace to exude competence which in turn could maximize the company’s potential as an organization. This empowerment establishes long term trust and interrelationship and increases productivity while boosting the morale of employees.
One way to establish this on-going need for empowerment is by proper task delegation to respective subordinates. These tasks should not be limited to their usual responsibilities because the mere task assignment of usual responsibilities leaves a connotation to the subordinates that their capacity, as perceived by their managers, is only limited to what they are usually assigned to do.
Various tasks should be assigned to employees for two major reasons: (1) to properly allocate manpower within the organization, and (2) to make sure that each employee diversify their knowledge on variances with what they do in their work.
When assigning a task, always make sure that the tasks assigned comes with proper explanation on why the task is assigned to a certain employee.
Doing such will stray subordinates from thinking that the task assigned is purposeless and will not give them any growth. Also, with this comes along the manager’s responsibility to provide their employees a briefing on what is in it for them when they accomplish these tasks. Moreover, employees should be given chances to ask questions to make sure that they understand you correctly.
This will not just make the assignments clear for them but will also create a great rapport between the manager and the subordinate.
In addition, to empower the subordinates effectively, there should be a clear demonstration of how the manager’s trust his/her employees. This can be done by providing them full authority on completing the task without having them constantly seeking for the manager’s approval.
However, most importantly, the responsibility of empowering goes along with the prevention of certain hazard issues in the workplace such as harassment. There are a set of responsibilities entailed to the leaders to empower their employees in preventing harassment within their work environment.
This responsibility of empowerment includes providing their constituents with an example of appropriate behavior. With a clear knowledge with what is appropriate, employees can be aware of what proper decorum in the workplace should be. Along with this, leaders should make sure that their subordinates understand these standards.
When faced with cases of harassment within the workplace, action should be taken promptly and consistently so as to make it clear that these actions are prohibited and respect is always regarded within the work environment. Moreover, leaders could empower their employees by being the prime advocate of a respectful work environment by acting upon conflict situation in the very onset of the incidence.
