Mobile Technology Enhances Student Learning: Is it Effective?

Abstract

The study investigated how mobile phone is effective to use in learning process for students nowadays. How often the students use their mobile phone, and why mobile phone is effective for students in learning. The survey was conducted by giving questionnaire to senior high school students in SMAN 1 ATAP Tejakula. Survey was selected 15 students randomly as the participants of this research. Mobile phone also has several features that can be used to browsing, sharing, upload, download, and also communicate with others people by Short Messages Service or via calling.

This research also found that some students said using mobile phone is effective for learning by using the features that exist in mobile phone. So the students task is how to use mobile phone to be an effective tool use in learning process and how to use mobile phone appropriately.

INTRODUCTION

Nowadays technology become one of the necessities that should people have in this world. Such as technology especially mobile phone.

At this time everyone has their own mobile phone even children who are 7 years old already have their own mobile phone. Besides that, children who are still toddlers have also been introduced to this mobile phone by their parents in order to make their children feel happy. Therefore, generation z must be able how to use this technology, especially in the world of education in order to increase students' insight into learning. So that, with this technology students can be facilitated to find various information and also can develop their critical thinking in solving problems.

Mobile learning or learning with mobile phone give powerful opportunities for effective teaching and learning makes it possible for students to asses multiple information sources that related with the education environment (Hamm, Saltsman, Jones,Baldridge, & Perkins, 2013). Not only that by this technology especially mobile phone also can develop students’ knowledge about vocabulary, but it has to decide an ideal tool to do this a vocabulary learning app on mobile phone or smart phone. In order to achieve this goal children need to actively learn and practice more about the words or vocabulary in English (Nation, 2013: 208). Beside that mobile learning involves the use of mobile phone to deliver electronic learning materials by accessing knowledge or new information from anywhere and anytime (Ally, 2004). Mobile learning or the use of mobile device such as mobile phone expands the boundaries of anytime and anywhere and also it has important role in the future of learning (Keegan, 2002; Wu et al., 2012).

According to Al-Emran, Elsherif and Shaalan (2015), mobile learning or learning by mobile phone makes students to communicate and interact with each other using mobile devices. Learning by mobile phone has important role to improve teaching methods of learning (Miloševic, Zivkovic, Manasijevic, & Nikolic; 2015). However, in order to understand how effective mobile learning is used for the students, we need to understand learners practices.

This research will discuss about the effectiveness using m-learning to enhance students’ knowledge that related with the education environment. So this paper will report it is effective for students or not by having the mobile phone in education fields.

Literature Review

1. Mobile phone in supporting learning process

Currently mobile phones are becoming popular for people, the use of mobile phone is necessary for everyone nowadays. Especially for education environment, According to (Huang et al, 2010), mobile phone is not only use in learning contents but also use in interacting with others anytime and anywhere. Ferry, (2009) said that mobile phones can be used to help students to access web based contents, share it, collaborate with others and create media for the classroom teachers. Moreover, Liaw (2009) reported that in higher education mobile phones can provide course materials to students including due dates for assignments, and information about time table and room changes. By mobile phones people can access everything on the internet, especially about education environment. Mobile phone is supporting learning process as Ferry said that mobile phones can help students to access web contents and of course they can read the information from many resources, they also can share it with others and also they can download audios and videos that related with the education environment.

2. Mobile phone applications

There are some features that exist in the mobile phone, such as Short Message Services (SMS), GPS, camera, browsing, downloading, bluetooth, Wi-Fi, voice calls and gaming (Kizito, 2012; Hoppe, 2009; Cui and Wang, 2008). Browsing with mobile phone is one of the effective ways to do by people in nowadays. Most of mobile phones are covered by several browsing applications, such as Mozilla fire fox, Google chrome, Opera Mini, and Internet explorer. Hoppe (2009), Ferry (2009) and Cui and Wang (2008) said that students can use browsers to check emails, read materials such as e-books, Wikipedia, or other resources from anywhere and at any time. Beside that in mobile phone there is downloading features, so students can download material in PDF form, audio, or video that related with the education environment. Mobile phone also can be used to share the academic information with others by Bluetooth, Shareit, and etc. For other application students can use Google Drive, Emails, and social media also can be used for sharing academic information or knowledge. According to Common Wealth of learning (2008), not only students can share the information by mobile phone, teachers also can share with students’ includes movies, audio files and other learning materials through their mobile phones. Based on those application that mobile phones have, of course it will support students to learn and also make students easier to access everything trough several features of mobile phones.

Research Question

Beside the advantages of using mobile phone in learning, there are several research question was appeared such as “Do students often to use mobile phone in learning?”, “Do students think that mobile phone is effective for learning?”, and Why is it effective use in learning process?”. So this makes students and also their parents have to consider about the effect of using mobile phone. Before decide to use mobile phone, students have to think first about the effect, it is good for learning or not. Or students can observe first what is the advantages of using mobile phones. By knowing the advantages of using mobile phone students can use it to develop their knowledge and also to improve their four English skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. But students should learn and more practice in using some features in mobile phone in order to get effectiveness learning.

METHOD

Research Design

This research used mix methods (qualitative and quantitative) to know is mobile phone can enhance students’ knowledge in learning? And is it effective using mobile phone in learning?. Survey was conducted by giving students a questionnaire to collect the data in the study. The hypothesis data that collected from qualitative and quantitative methods will answer research questions. How many students assume that mobile phone is effective for learning and it can enhance students’ knowledge through mobile phone. Survey or give the open questions for the students is used to get the data when students use mobile phone as their tool in learning. Survey or questionnaire is given in form of online design, so the students have to access the question by their personal mobile phone to complete little exercise that given in questionnaire.

Setting and Participants

The research was conducted by senior high school in SMAN 1 ATAP Tejakula to answer the questionnaire that given by the author. The students who have selected to answer the question were 15 students, they answer some questions from the questionnaire and they also give their reason about effectiveness using mobile phone as their tool in learning. So by giving students that questions of course students will answer it and then will get some data of that issue. By getting the data will know how many students assume that using mobile phone is effective for learning.

Data Collection Method and Analysis

To get students’ data about using mobile phone to enhance students’ knowledge, a questionnaire was conducted by giving several questions in form of online design. The question was based on author’ idea of the issue that talk about using mobile phone for learning. The survey questionnaire was focused on usage of mobile learning. Question include how often use mobile phone, how effective using mobile phone in learning is, and also the reason why mobile phone effective use in learning. The first question was to get demographic data, the second focused on effectiveness use mobile phone, and the last one focused on students perceptions about mobile learning for academic purpose.

This questionnaire was followed by 15 senior high school in SMAN 1 ATAP Tejakula at Sembiran. Students have to answer several questions that stated on the questionnaire and also give their reason why using mobile phone is effective for learning. Students have to access it by online form, so students have to use their own mobile phone to do that little exercise in their spare time. After students give their answer, automatically will get data related with the questions and will know how many students assume that using mobile phone is effective in learning process and how many students assume that mobile phone not effective in learning process.

This research was carried out by 15 students of senior high school who gave their response to answer some question in questionnaire. The first question “do you often to use mobile phone?” in the online survey 14 students gave yes answer and 1 student gave no answer for this question. For the second question it same as the first question 14 students gave yes answer and 1 student gave no answer. For the last question 14 students gave their reason by saying that mobile phone is effective for learning, and 1 student said not effective. The data was shown on the following table:

So from the data that carried out from questionnaire (appendix), it can say that the result of the data was very good and significant with the methods that use in the study. By knowing the result it can conclude that mobile phone is effective use in learning process. There are some reason why mobile phone is effective use for learning. Based on the participants’ experiences, it can easier to get new information from the internet, mobile phone is simple and easy to use anywhere and anytime. Most of them said that by using mobile phone it can make them easy to get and search the information that they don’t know before through mobile phone.

Discussion

The aim of this research was to know how effective mobile phone if it use for learning. The findings showed that using mobile phone is effective for learning process because it can help people to gain more information in the internet through mobile phone, beside that it is very simple tool because it easy to bring anytime and anywhere. So, people can search what they want to know at the urgent time as long as they bring their own mobile phone. Mobile learning or learning with mobile phone also can build interactions with people and technology, provides materials and deliver learning (Sharples, Sánchez, Milrad, & Vavoula, 2009, p. 4).

Conclusion and Suggestion

Mobile phone is one of the tools that needed by people around this world, especially for the students. Almost all of the students have their own mobile phones. The result of the this paper showed that using mobile phone is effective for learning because by mobile phone students can easier to gain the new information from the internet, access something important and search everything that students don’t know before, and also it easy to bring anytime and anywhere because it is flexible technology. But in order to access the information from the internet through mobile phone, it needs internet connection or wi-fi network. So we have to have good internet connection or wi-fi network to access some information.

Because nowadays this world is full of technology, students as new generation must be able to use technology well especially using mobile phone. Students need to learn and practice how to make mobile phone effective to use in learning not abuse the function of mobile phone. So, if students wants to get new information and get new knowledge from many sources students have to know the function of mobile phone. Or students can download apps that can support their learning in order to develop their vocabulary or they can use YouTube to listen the music or audio that can improve their listening skill. So by using mobile phone students can learn many things trough the mobile phone by use some apps from the mobile phone well to develop and to get some new knowledge.
