Human nature, or as defined by Wikipedia – “a bundle of characteristics, including ways of thinking, feeling, and acting, which humans are said to have naturally” is a term is often regarded as capturing what it is to be human, or the essence of humanity. The discussion of human nature is broader than any one’s idea of it. David Hume, in his renowned book A Treatise of Human Nature (1739–40) describes that – “The identity that we ascribe to things is only a fictitious one, established by the mind, not a peculiar nature belonging to what we’re talking about.

On the other hand, Edward O. Wilson in his book On Human Nature (1978) explains that – “Like most other mammals, human beings display a behavioral scale, a spectrum of responses that appear or disappear according to particular circumstances.” As both perspectives agree on the mutuality of people carrying the traditional peculiarity, it can be well understood why Nobel Prize winner Márquez was so successful in his most celebrated novel One Hundred Years of Solitude portraying the saga of Latin America and incorporated them with the idea of universal human behavior and traits as critics often recount about the novel displaying – “how individual perspective influence the idea of history.

According to Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet-diplomat and politician Pablo Neruda, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez is “The greatest revelation in the Spanish language since Don Quixote of Cervantes” . The novel since publishing in 1967, became a sensational piece of literature among the readers and was declared as an instant bestseller. García Márquez’s novel has been translated into more than thirty-five languages and sold 30 million copies. Marquez got the 1982 Nobel Prize for this outstanding work of fiction, magic realism, and of history where it chronicles the lives and loves of the Buendía’s as they endure civic uprisings and civil wars, invasions from ants and North Americans; strikes, massacres, plagues, and most devastatingly- their own nostalgia.

For all these striking features, Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer and journalist William Joseph Kennedy declared the book as “The first piece of literature since the Book of Genesis that should be required reading for the entire human race. Mr. García Márquez has done nothing less than to create in the reader a sense of all that is profound, meaningful, and meaningless in life.” The themes and setting of the novel are so unique and well combined that the time frame of Latin America or the basic human nature and framed within, making it a novel of universality.

As The Independent columnist M Amer Akhtab Muizz reviews the book saying – “Márquez delivers what many authors may have tried to convey, but never to this extent. It is a very thought-provoking piece of work, illustrating the truths we ignore every day as human beings” (29 June 2018), it can be very well understood that the enthralling novel of Marquez is a representation of human lives as it is. Thus, this paper aims at examining the imperishable factors of the earthlings circling through time again and again in the novel very profoundly.
