Edgar Allen Poe "The Cask of Amontillado"

Fortunato is a character from who was published in 1846. This story takes place in Italy, and it is really up in the air to where it actually took place. The Cask of Amontillado tells the story of a young guy that wants revenge on a person that disrespected him. Montressor, a member of a highly thought of family, is encountered by a man named Fortunato. Soon after making a plan to get revenge, Montressor talks to Fourtnato while at a carnival in the city, Montressor ask Foutnato’s help in verifying a barrel of Amontillado.

While Fortunato was drunk, Montresor finesses him into the catacombs at the bottom of his house, and chains him to an opening in a wall.

I made the decision to write on Fortunato because I personally think that he is a very interesting character. The arrogance that Fourtunato has towards Montresor and also others around him is something that can be agreed or disagreed with. Also I somewhat see his arrogance to be just like certain situations in my life as well, and can be seen as positive or negative.

In addition i didn't agree with Fourtunato’s arrogance due to the fact even though Montresor is wrong, the arrogance makes the end to be understanding. The Cask of Amontillado displays both good and evil through good and also bad tendencies of both main characters, leaves the character choosing between the less of two evils. Within the story Fortunato acts crazy and lets Montresor decide his fate.

Slightly, Fortunato can be labeled as a kinda crazy person. He shows up at a carnival wearing a costume that symbolizes a servant that pretends to be foolish for royalty. He states the costume was a “ tight fitting parti-dress” and his head was surmounted by the comical caps and bells” When they both went into the catacombs, Montresor says something about the costume, saying “ the gait of my friend was unsteady, and the bells upon his cap jingled as he strode” There is irony in the story as well, Fortunato was confident in himself, and his ability, and left the reader wondering why he decided to to wear that particular costume. Fortunato’s act as a fool was the result of him being drunk, making him a little more confident than usual. This made his costume a symbol for irony for example, “ he raised it to his lips with a leer. “He paused and nodded to me familarily, while his bells jingled”.

When Montresor eyes Fourtunato at the carnival he is heavily under the influence of alcohol. When they finally meet, Fortunato is already drinking and active in the activities around him, allowing his plan easier. “He turned towards me and looked into my eyes with two filmy orbs of intoxication”  After leaving the carnival under the influence, Fourtunato for some reason continues to drink while in the catacombs. After having a debate about the honesty of Montresor being a mason, Fortunato grabs his arm, and they continue the journey to search for the Amontillado. Montresor says, “ Be it so” I said , replacing the tool beneath the cloak and again offering him my arm, he leaned upon it heavily “.

Fortunato is an arrogant man that lets Montresor make him out as a joke. When Fourtnato is seen by Montresor during the celebration, Fortunato states to “ pride himself on his connoisseurship of wine” Fortuanto questions himself on whether he can determine fine wine that he talks down on Luchesi, which was Montresor’s other person that could determine whether or not the Amontillado was a fool. Claming “ He cannot distinguish sherry from Amontillado” During Montresor and Fortunato’s journey, there are a variety of events that lead to his unexpected end. Even though he is arrogant and drunk to realize it. When pleading with Fortunato to turn back he says “ Enough, the cough is a mere nothing, it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough. “True-true” Montresor replied.

After Fortunato realized how big the catacombs were, he actually stands up for Montresor one last time, claiming to have forgotten his family coat of arms, and Montresor replies “ A huge foot d’or, in a field azure, the foot crushes the serpent rampant, whose fangs are embedded in the heel” Montresor describing symbolized Fortunato as a coward, judging him for his shortcomings. Montresor hints at Fourtunato’s past were said as allegories and some were stated as metaphors. For example , Montresor tells Fortunato, “ Observe the white web-work which gleams from the cavern walls”  Also, Montresor suggests a black mask to symbolize death. He tries to protect his identity in the last moments which Fourtunato probably would have seen before.

All in all, the characters Montresor and Fortunato, and also The Cask of Amontillado as a whole, I have learned that being arrogant can make a person seem like a coward and a fool. It can get in the way of a person being honest with his or her self about what is in front of them. Another lesson someone can learn from this is you can never really trust a person's actions truthfully. Lastly, I have learned and comprehended that a person should be sincere,humble , and should treat every single person the way that they want to be treated. Based on the actions of Fortunato, I feel that Montresor was in the wrong and that every action has a reaction in some way. And treating someone in a bad way can sometimes lead to some
