English, France and Spain all had colonies in the New World. The English were the last to colonize the Americas, They were looking for new sources of wealth and power - gold, silver, lumber, and many crops. They wanted to weaken Spain by establishing new military outposts. Essentially they were all looking to get rich and expand their empire. The gold, silver, and agricultural profits from the colonies funded England and allowed them to create the English Colonial Empire.2. Describe the social pressures that contributed to the English colonization of North America.

People fled to America to escape poverty, famine, and political turmoil. Colonizers liked the abundance of land and wanted to start a better life. Money and opportunities were huge factors for Englishmen to move to America. The Puritans left for America because of religious persecution. England at this point had left the Roman Catholic Church and the King was considered the Head of the Church. Puritans did not recognize this new system and were persecuted for it.

Before the Enlightenment, the colonists did not question their obedience to the Crown of England, although England was thousands of miles away across the Atlantic ocean. Many enlightenment philosophers expressed that individuals should have the right to life, liberty, equality, and new forms of justice. John Locke was one of the most influential Enlightenment Philosophers. He expressed that legitimate Government comes from having consent from the Governed and the Government should have the best interest of the Governed at heart.

The escalated political issues between France and Britain and the economic conflict over natural resources led to the Seven Years' War, also called the French and Indian War. This colonist led to a division of political views between the colonists and the British. As more colonists were adopting Enlightenment ideas they became more frustrated with the increasing taxation by The Crown. Many groups protested these taxes through actions like the Boston Tea Party where Samuel Adams led the Sons of Liberty(Tea Party) to dump British imported tea. The Underground Railroad was made over 25 years after the American Revolution and was used for 40 years freeing an estimated 100,000 slaves from Southern Colonies/States.
