A duty of care is a legal obligation imposed on an individual requiring that they adhere to a standard of reasonable care while performing any acts that could foreseeable harm others. You have a duty of care to protect children from abuse and neglect including sexual, physical and mental abuse. All children have the right to be safe and be treated with respect and dignity. To maintain the child’s safety you must follow the settings legislations, policies and procedures. Performing risk assessments to ensure the environment is safe for example making sure entrances, exits and gates are locked.

Assessing the setting and making sure there are no potential hazards like hazard materials being left out or electrical sockets being left uncovered. Ensuring the setting is clean to stop the spread of infection. That food is stored properly to stop cross-infection and the kitchen is always clean to stop the spread of bacteria and germs. Also by challenging any strangers that come into the setting. Ensuring that staff has been trained in first Aid and that they have the right equipment to deal with accidents and injuries. It is also essential to complete accident forms when an accident occurs and getting the parent or career to sign to say there have been made aware. Reporting any concerns or allegations while maintaining confidentiality. And to only allow parents and careers to collect the children.

Also some parents may feel that the use of scissors in not necessary and feel that it may be dangerous, however children need to use different types of equipment and do practical activities to learn important life skills.
