Discussion Questions

To you, what is the importance of transference and counter transference?

‘Transference’ is the unconscious transfer of emotions feelings and attitudes from one person to another person in a situation, an ideal example of transference would be the transfer of emotional and personal feelings including, love, affection, hatred or anger from a patient receiving treatment, towards the health professional or service provider (Breuer & Freud, 1895). The reciprocation of such feelings is termed as ‘Counter-transference’ which could be in the form of responses and would involve counter emotions of love, affection or anger and hatred educed in the receiver (Breuer & Freud, 1895).

Transference and counter-transference are important to me as according to the ‘Code of Ethics of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, it is unethical for the therapist / professional and the client to be involved in any kind of sexual relationship or dual relationship which could “impair professional judgment” of the professional and “increase the risk of harm” to the client (AMHCA, Code of Ethics, 2000).

Alfred Adler placed a great deal of emphasis on birth order. What is it and do you agree with its importance?

Birth order is defined as a person’s rank by the sequence of birth among his or her siblings. Birth order is commonly believed to have a profound and lasting effect on psychological development. Researchers believe that first-born siblings are expected to be rated higher on the characteristic trait of dominance whereas siblings who are younger or born later can be rated higher on the sociability aspect (Sulloway, 1995; 1996).

Alfred Adler (1870-1937) who was an Austrian psychiatrist was among the foremost theorists proposing that birth order impacts the individuality of a person. He debated that the order in which a child is born has the potential to significantly alter the lifestyle of a person which involves several facets of the personality such as companionship, love, occupation and many other aspects of life (Adler, 1964). Adler proposes that when a second child is born, the firstborns are ‘dethroned’, thereby having the potential of influencing them permanently as younger siblings and single children are sometimes pampered (Adler, 1964).
