This tells us that their relationship is falling apart and they don’t have much chance of repairing it. Armand is trying to blame Desiree and Desiree is not accepting the blame. This tells us that they are not the ideal couple and they can’t agree with each other. The similarities between this couple and the Loisels are loisel and mathilde stay with each other and are happy despite having ensis to deal with it. When mathilde lost the necklace loisel reacts in a way that you could not imagine. He tells mathilde that he will walk on foot to look for it, and he spent all night doing so.
He also takes mathilde to the jewellers and paid 36,000 franks witch he never had to spend. The effect on loisels relationship is that it gets better and it works out, because they are poor and only have each other. Also whilst they were rich mathilde could have near enough anything she wanted. The main effect is there relationship was rocky at the beginning “why my dear what you wish me to do with that” said loisel, and at the end of the story there relationship is strong and they are happy with each other and what they have got!
When Armand discovers the letter that is telling him of his mixed origin, Armand feels unhappy and angry “and it was he who dealt out half a dozen Negroes the material which kept the fire ablaze. ” This tells us that Armand is taking the news badly. I think Desiree’s tragedy is a result of her relationship with Armand because she would have not left otherwise and she was happier without Armand rather than being with him, because this made her unhappy “my mother, they tell me that I am not white, Armand has told me I am not white.
” This tells us that she does not get treated well by Armand. Racism at the time could be to blame if Armand would be more inclined to let Desiree stay, and to not only have black slaves. This shows us that racism is to blame. Because Mathilde borrows the necklace for the ball and then looses it. It is therefore her fault that she and loisel have to work hard to pay off the money the borrowed to buy a brand new necklace. The loisels feel like they are in love with each other by the end of the story.
They are happier as well, because when they had money they wanted different things, however when they were poor they got closer to each other, because they had to lean on each other to pay off there debts. I have to say that overall the most loving relationship is loisels and Mathildes, because they really learned how to love each other by the end of the story and also learnt that money is not everything. In both stories the only two characters I sympathy with is Desiree and Loisel, because Desiree gets accused of being mixed race when in fact she is not, and loisel cant to enough to please Mathilde and she throws it all back in her face.
If Racism would not have mattered to Desiree and Armand and they would probably still be together. And also no because mathilde thought she was better than everyone else from the beginning anyway so that is no reason for down fall.
