Universal Discovery, Description and Integration Model (UDDI) are a platform independent technology for registering businesses all over the world over the internet. It is a standards based technology which is widely accepted for publishing, finding and binding a web service for connection and interaction. Its concept of directories is classified under yellow, white and green pages (Tidwell, 2001). It is a business standard to reach their customers and partners with information about their products and services.
It also enables a business to fetch right kind of integration with other systems and processes (W3Schools. com, 2008). Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) is an application protocol providing advanced directory services like querying and modifications of directory structures in organizations (Vakali, 2004). The central idea of web services would be to fetch the access of remote applications and bind them for effective communication. UDDI stands a better bet at publishing, finding and binding web services for the achievement of their functionality.
UDDI’s integration with lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) comes to play as enterprises bring the capability of UDDI into their mainstream use. The directory services best fit the tapping of the UDDI resources and expertise which also provides scalability, reliability and security of the data (Karpinski, 2002a). Sun Microsystems, Novell and BEA systems have also exploited the directory services of LDAP and its possible integration with UDDI (Karpinski, 2002b). On the other hand, Systinet is exploring its opportunities with WASP web services for larger security issues.
Novell is taking a large initiative in providing representation for the UDDI data in the LDAP directory. It lays emphasis on the successful integration and enabling of the data integration and exchange among LDAP and UDDI. On the security front, the integration would enable replication services of LDAP directories quiet smoothly and enable large scale integration of orgaizations data. The UDDI directories support authentication mechanisms, adding security to the registry and are extremely fast and scalable (Kearns, 2002).
On the reliability segment, UDDI just does not make it possible to integrate among alike minded or transacting parties but creates a secure and genuine connection with other systems process for right and timely delivery of business communication and extending reach. The directory services with LDAP enable an organization to structure themselves in a standard manner for efficient handling of their internal processes as well. The scalability feature is of large scale use and development for small to medium enterprises.
UDDI along with LDAP directory services not only enables business to prosper but to extend their market reach to various newly developing segments and regions for spreading their services for right amount of integration for business continuity and long term success. The objective of both LDAP and UDDI enables that their integration is a right combination for fetching the right outset towards web services and developing a robust system for an enterprise for organizing their web directory for a substantial access.
The integration makes it often easy to find quickly their services which would have taken a greater effort for retrieval by use of relational databases. In contrast the use of relational databases is an option, however the LDAP services for looking up for encryption certificates, pointers, provides single sign on services to the directory and many others. UDDI’s integration with LDAP is efficient in faster lookups for information and less updates. However the scalability feature is largely supported by UDDI which makes it a right choice with LDAP.
The security aspects find themselves challenging as web revolutionizes the use in almost all sizes of organization. LDAP security ensures that directory services with UDDI restrict client authentication and authorization using SASL and TSL protocols. It also enforces data integration, protection against snooping, resource limitation rules and server authentication (Tech-faq. com, 2008). Not only LDAP, but UDDI registry and node policies ensure enough security for its registry structures.
It’s also safeguards against schema versioning and has strict policies in the implementation of internationalization (UDDI. org, 2008).
