These conceptions tend to be cultural rather than biological. Gender is culturally defined, with significant differences from culture to culture. Gender roles in society have existed for thousands of years and have been essential to the survival of different cultures.

For example, in the past Native American tribes relied on the women to gather materials, prepare food for their tribes, make clothing and trading goods, and care for the children and the elderly.

Yet the men’s responsibilities included hunting, building weapons, negotiating agreements, and fighting in wars.

Whereas in some middle eastern countries gender roles are followed very strictly regardless of the changes in surrounding countries. In most middle eastern countries the women are offered fewer rights than men and are required to subordinate to male authority.
